Personally speaking MagnaCut did make a lot of steels obsolete if I had the choice but that's always the catch, is it available in every model that I want?

But also that doesn't just mean I have no interest in other steels. At least for me this hobby isn't about buying the one and only best of anything.

For example, if they ever decide to make the Military 2 in 52100/peel ply carbon fiber I'm going to be all over it, and I don't think 52100 can keep up with these steels but I still like it.

The obsolete part for me is, if I had to narrow it down to just one steel, what steel would that be? And for me it would be MagnaCut, and potentially (likely) MagnaMax. But thankfully I don't have to narrow it down to just one option. If I somehow had control over what the standard issue Spyderco steel is, I would absolutely choose MagnaCut so long as it didn't negatively effect production time and cost.

Choice is the big one for me though. If I have to choose between MagnaCut and a lot of other mid tier steels then that's what I'm choosing. If I really like a knife but it's not being made in MagnaCut, then S30V/etc won't stop me from buying it.

I guess my question was valid after all.

What I'll never understand is why people always react like this is a bad thing. The whole idea of "the best thing until the next best thing comes along" is a luxury that we are incredibly lucky to experience. I genuinely hope that MagnaMax gets a 4-5 year run and is replaced by a steel that's even better. This kind of progress can continue indefinitely as far as I'm concerned.

It's not the steel that is bad - It's the mentality that comes with them that is. ;)

I guess I just don't see that mentality, or maybe I'm part of it and I don't know it? I'm just here to have fun and new steels keep it fun for me.

Again, I think it's worth nothing that my original question was posed with a sense of sarcasm. I was really just poking fun at the Magnacut trend and how it came across to me sometimes.

Then when you posed a dissenting opinion to those who told me otherwise - I was just jokingly calling back to my original question.

I’ve developed a preference for tool steel. I love how some of them develop a beautiful patina over time. I will still get the stainless steels but the tool steels see more pocket time with me. Like today I’m carrying the Leafjumper SE K390 and the Lil’ Native CPM 10V.

Incredibly good taste, my friend.

Have we seen any numbers from Larrin or elsewhere to substantiate this “stainless K390” rep?
Of course.

I’d love to see the bow river in this steel. That model deserves a higher end steel and this would be perfect. A wharnie PM2 would be cool too.

A Sprint Run of a 5 inch bladed Native Chief in MagnaMax.

If they retail for around $350 plus or minus $25, I'll buy 2+.

These are my kidneys in a frying pan...you can do whatever you want with them AFTER you manufacture the 5 to 5.5 inch bladed Native Chief in MagnaMax or S110V. I may buy 4 of them.

I want Enduras in Magnacut and Magnamax. I will buy other knives to try out a steel if I have to but having Enduras makes it as close to apples to apples testing as I need to get to satisfy myself. I know there are other variables. So many that I have to draw the line somewhere.
