Reveal 18 - Live!
Re: Reveal 18 - Live!
Thanks, Kristi!
The Lil Native BBB15Vs are a lock, as is the Balance Sprint.
I'll probably grab a Manix 2XL Salt if Vivi doesn't buy them all first. But it may have to wait if other 15V Sprints drop around the same time. Still keeping powder dry for the Native 5 & Native Chief CruCartas, too.
Many other wants from this Reveal, but they will have to be a pass, or perhaps a postpone, until the economy settles - if it ever does.

that lil native in 15v rose my eyebrows the most.

Also very interested in the PlainEdge MagnaMax mule and the Fatcarbon Chap.
The Metropolitan is a maybe and after my experience with the NAND, I’ll wait on the COBOL until I can handle it.
Do I skip the blackout Manix salt and go for the XL since I already have the lightweight?

Re: Reveal 18 - Live!
I found my first Bodacious!
I was pumped about the blacked out Police until I realized the body of the knife is s/s.
The Cobol looks neat. It’s the second or third non locking blade that has caught my eye in the last couple reveals.

Re: Reveal 18 - Live!
didn't see a manix xl salt coming out. it's good to see that design get some love.
the balance, dyad, and meerkat, are all models i've wish i had in the past. great to see those revived, but i'll probably pass on them since spyderco revised their opsfocus policy to exclude sprints. it's hard watching sprints i would like just sit unpurchased on the spyderco page at msrp. please make opsfocus great again, spyderco! (please don't get me wrong... i'm very appreciative. i just think it's a little silly to let sprints sit in stock where people can only buy them at full msrp.)
crazy to see the bodacious is already available for purchase on spyderco! that's cool to see.
some nice new additions in this reveal.

Re: Reveal 18 - Live!
Well, I try to only buy 2-3 knives a year, but just ordered my first one, the Bodacious SPY-27.
Number 2 will be the MagnaMax mule and number 3 will be the BBB collab. Might sneak a Manix XL 15v in there too as the mule doesn’t really count.

Re: Reveal 18 - Live!
In terms of products, this is easily my favorite Reveal in the last 5 years.
The Starmate, Balance, and Chaparral all look fantastic, but sadly, I think the conversation about pricing may outshine some of these knives.
I think the Meerkat, Dyad Jr., Shaman LW, and the slew of SPY27 and 15V are obviously welcome and priced very competitively, as is the addition of a SpyderEdge Mule (I think H-2 and the other Salt steels would make good candidates for these in the future).

Re: Reveal 18 - Live!
The reappearance of three uncommon models that each have something intriguing to offer is nice for newcomers.
Having their OGs, I have eyes here for the intriguing COBOL, which I shall regard as akin to my PITS and PITS2. And, I’m already here for the smooth G10 Bodacious and Fatcarbon Chap. These pretty much will test my wife’s patience in these times.

Some really cool knives in there which I would normally be tempted to buy, but given the pricing they will be a hard pass in these times.

Re: Reveal 18 - Live!
Here in europe all prices seem rather okayish except the Chaparral that for some reason almost costs as much as my Nirvana did at 420€ …RamZar wrote: ↑Tue May 27, 2025 11:40 amThe stealthy all-black Police is nice but not $285.00 nice for VG-10 and black TiCN coating. On the other hand, the stealthy all-black Manix2 XL with MagnaCut, black bi-directional textured G-10 and black DLC coating is a relative bargain at $224.25.
The Chaparral Red Dark Matter Fatcarbon looks great but it’s still XHP which rusts easily and a pricey $318.75.
The Starmate Sprint is another nice one with better steel but pricey at $337.50.

Oooh I am very excited for Dyad Jr. and Metropolitan. Hopefully I will be able to grab dyad before they are all gone. Such a quintessential Spyderco design, absolute legend and beauty.

Re: Reveal 18 - Live!
I wonder why the Lil' Native sprint runs are 3.2 mm thick vs. the standard Lil' Natives that are 2.5 mm thick? The increased thickness is unfortunate because I like thinner blades, especially on small knives.
Re: Reveal 18 - Live!
I think you got it backwards. The lil natives in production are g10 and are 3.2 mm thick. The upcoming (not yet released) lil native lw is 2.5 mm. The 15V sprint runs appear to be g10 and 3.2mm, unless I am misreading the release.captnvegtble wrote: ↑Wed May 28, 2025 6:45 amI wonder why the Lil' Native sprint runs are 3.2 mm thick vs. the standard Lil' Natives that are 2.5 mm thick? Im kinda curious about the meerkat and will likely try to get one.
The starmate is cool, but the price is rough.

Re: Reveal 18 - Live!
This is a cool reveal. I'm still digesting it.
Many of us here do prefer thinner blades and grinds. I think we could lose .5 mm blade stock across nearly all models, making grinds proportionately thinner.
We always rehash the benefit/ cost analysis for warranty purposes, I wonder how much it is that vs other manufacturing process and tooling reasons, and other factors?
My LNs are 3.2. As I understand, it is only the Lightweight models that have the thinner blade stock.captnvegtble wrote: ↑Wed May 28, 2025 6:45 amI wonder why the Lil' Native sprint runs are 3.2 mm thick vs. the standard Lil' Natives that are 2.5 mm thick? Trying to think what I would do with an SE mule. It’s a lot of teeth.

I don't need an SE Mule... but it's and SE Mule for testing, how cool is that.

Re: Reveal 18 - Live!
All in all, a fun reveal. Happy to see both the Bodacious and Manix 2 XL get some additional attention, as it sounds like they have historically been a bit neglected when it comes to variants. My hope is that whatever last run of the 15V runs consist of, will include these two.
I hadn’t see pricing at all, but I assume that it is because some excited folks saw the reveal and went to their favorite online retailer to do a preorder and some of the eyewatering prices gave some hesitation.
I think where Spyderco is winning is just the huge span of product they have. And listening well to such a diverse customer base. I’m sure that is difficult. I know we all have our favorite steels and such, but I’m hoping that perhaps with some of the knife steel advancements we are seeing, we’ll have a little more standardized/concentrated offerings that can help streamline the catalog and maybe help lower prices in the future.
Historically, I don’t really know if $337 is good or not for a Starmate, or $220+ for a Balance, but I will agree with many of the posters that there are these invisible thresholds and onced crossed, the price just turns people off and they say no. I can think of dozens of knives I’d rather have at those prices, but I still don’t have any of those because even more than that, I’d rather have no knives at those prices, it is just too much. The old addage I think is true for many of us…when ‘knife price’ starts competing with ‘gun price’ territory, I know what most would rather have.
After thinking about it, I’m wondering if a knife like the Starmate is really a nod to collectors and collectors only, seeing as how secondary market prices are even more. I can only see it as such because there is just no way it can compare to something like the Sage 6 S90V, which is a more advanced EDC knife that is actually cheaper.
Even with some of those prices, I firmly believe that we are well within the best timeline in Spydero’s history, and in a ‘golden age’ of carryable knives in general. I’m very appreciative.

Re: Reveal 18 - Live!
I really feel bad for people just getting into the hobby. The prices are CRAZY these days! Not blaming Spyderco, I understand how it works...but it's truly crazy at this point. Certainly glad I'm all but done buying knives. I'll enjoy my $80 Delicas and $140 Manix's and not take them for granted!
