MagnaCut in Seki knives
Re: MagnaCut in Seki knives
Would love a Magnacut Delica or Salt 2...
Re: MagnaCut in Seki knives
Me too for a Salt 2.
Sadly though I suspect it's not going to happen. It's been a couple of years since Spyderco starting using MagnaCut and, other than in this thread, I don't think there's been any hint of MC making it to Seki. More recently Sal stated there were no plans to introduce it to the Stretch 2 XL (presumably a good candidate). So my best guess this has been scuppered either by the uncertainty regarding its availability and/or unknown challenges with using it in Seki (cost of export or challenge of working with it).
Hope I'm wrong because it feels like a huge missed opportunity.

We need a thin stock Magnacut Spyderco.
Many manufacturers give you MC blades on thin stocks, and those work so well.
My vote goes for a hollow ground Centofante or Stretch 2 XL.

Re: MagnaCut in Seki knives
I would love to see a high hardness magnacut in their kitchen line too.
Re: MagnaCut in Seki knives
Sorry for being the squeaky wheel and all that kind of thing, but I was wondering how things were progressing with getting MagnaCut into the Seki Salts? It's been >2 yrs since Sal said "I'm sure MC will get to Seki" but sadly no sign so far. Would love to know if this is ever going to happen!
Re: MagnaCut in Seki knives
Hi Farmer,
Seki is pretty busy right now trying to keep up, so it might still be a while. When you consider the fact that all of the H2 Salts re made in Seki, adding MagnaCut to their steel use is not as critical.

Thanks Sal - always grateful to get a reply from the main man - even if it's not the answer I was hoping for!
I am curious about one thing. I totally get what you say about serrated H2. But given its performance, doesn't MagnaCut make plain edge H2 rather redundant? In previous threads other salt users have seemed to be of the same mind.

Hi Farmer,
Some, like Vivi, might disagree? H1/H2 is still the most rust free steel we use. Vivi says he sharpens a plain edge with a coarse stone and it performs well. It's also made in Japan. Shipping steel from new York to Golden, and then shipping it to Japan, would increase the price just because of shipping. Also, we've not worked with our Japanese Maker on how to heat treat MagnaCut.
Hope that helps?

Re: MagnaCut in Seki knives
Farmer, for me it's almost the opposite. H1/H2 has made Magnacut redundant. I'm sure it's great, I'll probably get some someday, but I am so satisfied with H1 that I don't need to have it.

Very helpful insight indeed thanks Sal.sal wrote: ↑Tue May 13, 2025 3:22 pmHi Farmer,

So could I put in a plea then please? To the best of my knowledge there are currently zero choil-less Spydies in MagnaCut. It would be great if the choil-haters amongst us also had the chance to try this steel!
Re: MagnaCut in Seki knives
I tried the coarse edge approach but it still left me somewhat underwhelmed, both in terms of edge retention and fine cutting performance. Glad to hear you've made it work for you though
