Let’s talk about Manbugs

And the leaf in particular. I carry one with a lanyard all the time and it is most of the time all I need. I have owned several of the OG Manbugs and just find the leaf more utilitarian than the skinner. I find the leaf to be a mini Lil’ Temp (micro Temp?) and with the lanyard I get both pocket retention and orientation and a four finger grip. I will pickup a Hawkbill soon but already have (and this is my 3rd) Ladybug Hawkbill. I would also like to see a Sheepsfoot FFG as the Sheepsfoot/Rescue Manbug is a mini H1 Enuff and equally thick behind the edge. Lastly, I wish a few premium options like carbon fiber and bolsters or titanium were often introduced. The Manbug is the modern Case Peanut and is the model I will buy multiples of

I've been thinking about getting a Manbug Leaf myself. I'm just not sure how I would like such a small knife. Maybe I'll wait for a good sale to try one out. The SE version is the most appealing.

EDIT: I find your label of a "Mini-Lil' Temp" to be intriguing as I really like my Lil' Temp!

The wharncliffe and hawkbill are the only 2 on my want list, but I can see the utilitarianism of the leaf as we clearly see in so many Spyderco designs. I have carried the same SE foliage Ladybug on my keys for over a decade now, it's just hard to unseat the queen. Even if I do, I have about a dozen more that could take her place. I've never even carried my sprint versions yet. Maybe they will get passed down to my children.

One you should try to get is a ManBug in the Micro Melt PD #1... I have gifted more than a few of these and that steel is very impressive for what we are charged for and compared to the other choices you have with the ManBug. Least jimo... just say'n...

I did take them all apart and dye the scale/grip all black, then hone the blades at 15 dps. Tied a lanyard on a couple others just wanted the knife like on a key ring.

Everyone loved them but who wouldn't love these knives, and these with this Micro Melt PD #1 steel really are special with how well they stay sharp.

Edit: This steel is getting harder to find by the day and soon will be no more!!!

I have an H1 serrated wharnie, a VG10 PE wharnie, and a ZDP-189 Manbug.

I honestly don't use them much, but they are always part of my daily carry, apart from the larger folder that I bring.

I plan to get the Spy27 variant when it comes out. Wouldn't mind if the company produced some in LC200N or MagnaCut as well, as corrosion resistance is important to me.

The Mangbug Wharnie is by far the best version. Wish it came in K390 or PD1!

I have a blacked-out wharnie. Cute little thing. I can see that they are useful. However, when I carry it I automatically reach for the full size knife...

Anyone who hasn’t tried the design with a knotted lanyard is missing out. They should come that way from the factory in fact.

Let me add that M-F I prefer a knife down in my pocket with slacks and tucked in shirt as it looks better and keeps me from scratching my (and your) vehicles with the clip which has happened. I have also had good luck with a Dragonfly with the clip removed and lanyard added as well.

I dug around and apparently have a few of these. Sadly, I misplaced my favorite - the K390 Ladybug.



As a primary carry, the Manbug would take the cake, being easier to manipulate with my XL hands. However, as a secondary carry I have fully embraced the smaller and pointier Ladybug. Sad the Ladybug was not included in the PD1 run, and sad the Manbug has not yet seen the Pakkawood treatment. I'm guessing they are hoping Spyderco would do a Pakkawood MB with bolsters (please!)?

Could people that are Manbug users describe how they hold them during use?

The grip I use is a fingertip grip: index finger on top of the blade hump, remaining three fingerprints on one side and thumbprint on the other. I can't figure out a palm grip more like the larger knives I am used to.

I have a Manbug V-toku as one of my grails was to complete the V-toku set. I aquired the Ladybug first and while I do admire it I thought it was just a tad bit skinny for my hands. When I got the Manbug it definitely felt more secure in my hand with the taller handle. The vg10 hawkbill was the first Lady/Manbug that I immediately thought "I need that." Looking forward to snagging one when I see a good deal and give myself a few Manbug challenge weeks. Although Jeb has me thinking I should just pull the trigger today on a PD#1.

The SE Manbug leaf is my keychain EDC. It's invaluable. If I had to keep only one on-my-person EDC blade it'd be this one. It'll open packages, it'll act as a steak knife in a pinch, it'll cut straps, break down boxes. SE never stops cutting. Plus it doesn't raise any alarm bells with people, and vg-10 is easy to sharpen.

I also have a PE wharncliffe manbug which would be my second choice. I find a little bit of belly-plus-serrations on the leaf as sliiightly more useful. I'd be interested in the regular shaped manbug SE if they ever came out with that, as the extra belly with SE could be pretty awesome.

Add a knotted lanyard that gets me a four finger grip. As a benefit it keeps it oriented tip up in my pocket and aids in it not falling out when sitting

I want another G-10 type Manbug. I don't particularly care what steel is chosen, as long as the scales are G-10, micarta, or carbon fiber. I just despise FRN.
