Is this straight from the SFO? Looks like my first Bodacious (and first SPY27 finally)

Yep, from SFO.

The told me they got 10 in just that morning and hadn’t even brought them out to the floor yet.

They put 5 on the website and they sold out instantly.

He brought one out and we got to check it out together. The fact that they are selling that quick is a reassuring sign, as I really like the Bodacious and would like to see continued support for the model. I don’t own one yet but I will. Between this and the S30V version, I’m not sure which one appeals more.

I asked how SPY27 will fare in light of the Crucible situation and the SFO said they have loads of it, and didn’t seem too worried.

I dont see enough difference with this one to go after it specifically, but a Bodacious Salt (either Magnacut or Magnamax, if it passes corrosion tests) and a Cruwear version would be excellent and would probably be pretty popular.

Well, I just noticed, looking at these pictures, that the Bodacious doesn't have a tip-down carry option. This has probably been discussed before, and I just didn't catch it. Too bad, I prefer tip down for knives with compression locks (and many others, too).

Not a deal breaker, but a bit of a disappointment. Heck.

It's the best design Spyderco makes but I might be a little bit biased 🤣

I have one of these inbound. I'll probably end up buying every flavor of this knife.

Very excited for this one, once I saw it I ordered it from SFO directly yesterday. Had some money saved for a Sage REX-121 but this one just looked so good it took my money. I already have a Para 3 and Native 5 in Maxamet so missing out on the Sage won't be too bad.

This will be my first Bodacious and first SPY-27. I did get my son a Manix LW SPY-27, so I have had some time with the steel. I always found S30V chippy for whatever reason and the SPY-27s increased toughness should help cure that. Not to mention the scales look great, especially in @Red Leader's photos.

Must be great to be so close to Spyderco when a reveal drops you can just stop by. I think if the star ever align Spyderco will have to be my retirement job.

Hopefully I am as big of a fan as @Evil D.

Currently still available on Spyerco.com if anyone is interested.

I was holding out for sprint but that Blue might just win me over. I still need to try SPY27, be nice to have an easy to sharpen steel since this would be a user for me. Hopefully they will be in stock and on sale at X-Mass.

I was about to tell you this is a Sprint run but it seems like only some of the Spy27 models in this reveal are sprints, and the rest are meant to be standard production? At least they're separated in the reveal that way.

I would call anything is SPY27 a Sprint run now as its days are limited.

When we stopped by, we had no idea the reveal was out, nor that this particular knife was hot off the presses - good timing I suppose!

I am still eagerly awaiting the Manix 2 15V and the MagnaMax mules. Barring those, I’m starting to run out of things for the want list, and I firmly believe that we are in the best time period in Spyderco history. A golden age for knives.

Well that was actually my understanding but then I looked in the reveal again and it's confusing how they're separated.

This is probably the first time two models have been made in the same steel while one is standard production and the other is a Sprint, since at least far enough back when a handle color option was enough to call it a Sprint. When else was the last time a steel was produced in a Sprint and standard production? Maybe one of the Chaparrals that have different handles?

Can't knock SPY27 in a work knife, just not sure why Spyderco even released the Bodacious in S30V to begin with? I was under the impression SPY27 was going to be the standard steel moving forward but then Magnacut became all the rage.

Spyderco s30v is pretty excellent in terms of overall performance. Spy27 is more along the lines of vg10, but also excellent. I believe it boils down to edge retention vs toughness.
On a more pragmatic note, what else would you do with stockpile of steel if you are a knife manufacturer?

No steel expert by any means and also never tried Spy27 yet, so I am just parroting what I get from others who know what they are talking about.

That said: Seems like Spy27 is very close to S35VN.

To quote Dr. Larrin Thomas: "SPY27 behaves surprisingly similarly to S35VN despite the somewhat different composition." (https://knifesteelnerds.com/2021/05/10/ ... 15-rex-76/).
Top three going by pocket-time (update April 25):
- EDC: Endela SE (K390). Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10), Chaparral SE (CTS XHP)
- Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 2 SE (LC200N), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), Endela SE (K390)

Agree, everything I have heard is that SPY27 gives up a little edge retention to more toughness vs S30V. But otherwise they are very similar.

I have also heard it’s like a more stainless XHP.

I don’t have have Spyderco’s s35v for comparison.
I have spydercos vg10, spy27 and s30v. Spy27 sharpens similar to vg10. S30v sharpens significantly different (slower?). Regarding edge retention and toughness I have hard time distinguishing between the three in real life, but based on sharpening maybe s30v holds the edge better. All three are excellent.

The only steels I can differentiate between in use are on the extreme ends of the toughness vs edge retention debate.
