Pretty impressed by the Efficient

#1

Post by Jim Malone »

I just received my Efficient from coutellerie tourangelle. I am pretty impressed by the knife.
Made in China the fit and finish is pretty good. Only slight problem i saw was that the g10 handles on one side have a slight space between the handle and steel liners. The fit and finish are very nice.
Blade was tight so i had to tweak it a little bit ( probably due to concerns that it would be considered a "gravity knife" by some customs) with my little torx screwdriver.
I didn´t took it apart but it looks they used two bronze washers.
The steel isn´t a supersteel (8Cr13MoV) but it came very sharp and clean from the factory. I stropped it a few times and this improved sharpness even more.
Blade is full flat grind and more of a leaf type.
The thing that impressed me the most was the fact that it fits my XXL paws really nice and that it´s build like a tank!
Steel double liners and a steel backspacer makes this knife feel really sturdy!
I bought it as a work knife for light cutting and opening cardboard boxes and stuff.
I wanted something friendly looking that wouldn´t scare my coworkers or the bank.
Spyderco states in it´s little pamflet that it´s not a collectors knife but a knife designed as a tool.
The only drawback for some people could be the bladesteel and the heft due to the amount of steel used in the liner lock, liners and steel backspacer.
It has a deep(er) carry wireclip so i hope it will not get noticed too much at work.

Hi Jim,

I'm glad you are enjoying the knife. Eric designed the model and we've been working with the maker for more than 20 years. Always improving and he's got the heat treat of that steel down. It's part of the "Tenacious" family, which is made in several sizes. It sharpens up well and is a good work steel.

Let us know what you think after you've used it for a while?

Sounds like a real winner! If you ever want to check out another budget Spydie i can also highly recommend the Astute!
Its also a bit of a smaller design that is very well build and its a great slicer its also very thin in the pocket.
Out off all the budget Spydies its my favorite.

The Tenacious has been on a short list for me to try for a while now. Has great reviews and is a perfectly sized knife hard use edc knife. I want to try the M4 version as it’s been a great steel on my GB2 and I want to add more to my collection.

Unfortunately it gets pushed to the back burner as I am either waiting for it to hit the right price on a sale or another knife like the Para 3 LW 15V takes priority.

Good thing I don’t work at Spyderco, I would never have any money left in my paycheck.

Man, I'll second the fact me working at Spyderco would never result in me getting a paycheck, heck I would have to pay them to work there if any thing...

I'd get fired from Spyderco for sneaking into the R&D department and telling them how to design the knife I want 🤣

Hi Sal,

I was under the impression that Ed Schempp was the designer of that model, but it now seems as though I may have misunderstood something. Could you kindly clarify whether Ed was involved with creating the Efficient? :respect :bug-white-red

Thanks,

The Efficient Is a great knife and excellent value. While I prefer the Native for being sleeker and having a backlock, the Efficient is much more affordable.

The Efficient was my third Spyderco folder after the SpydieChef and Resilience. I gifted the Efficient to a close friend. That one was the OD Green variant. I have thought to replace it many times, but I have enough Native 5s to keep me content.

I'm also curious to know more about the history and design process. I had the impression that Eric designed it possibly with Ed Schempp's input.

Hi Enactive,

I stand corrected. Ed Schempp is given credit for the original design.

I spoke with Eric a short while ago. He drove the project. Eric said that Ed designed it with input from Eric.
