Help me thin out the herd

#1

Post by Cowboyfromhell »

So I want to purge my Spyderco collection from 30+ to 15. Been collecting Spyderco for 6 yrs now and its time to move some. I want to start with models I have multiples of and would like some opinions. Which would you keep vs which you get rid of...

Shaman - satin M4 od green micarta, satin s90v burlap micarta, 15v BBB
PM2 - dlc cruwear purple g10, blurple s110v, 15v BBB
Manix 2 - Rex45 burnt orange g10, 15v BBB
Endura - k390, hap40/sus10, zdp-189

Thanx for any insight folks.

I have a feeling the majority of folks will tell me to keep the 15v but I also would like a variety of steels not just one flavor so to speak....

I would keep all of the Enduras (especially in K390 and HAP40) and the REX45 Manix - but this is (of course) so subjective and based on personal preferences that it probably would not make much sense to explain my reasons...
Top three going by pocket-time (update October 25):
- EDC: Endela SE (K390). Endela SE (VG10), Manix 2 LW (REX45)
- Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 2 SE (LC200N), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1)

Yeah my first thought was actually to keep all the 15V first.

The second thought after reading that you want a variety, is how would you decide which to keep in 15V? I'd feel like I'm always missing the other option. But I think the answer here is look at all the models you have in 15V and if there's another steel you really like then maybe that's a 15V you get rid of.

Personally I'd sell all of these except for the 15v Shaman and Manix 2, because most of your other options here are outclassed by 15V and the only others in that list that somewhat get my attention are S90/110V for a higher corrosion resistance option.

Okay, this is just my personal opinion from the gut. Good luck a lot of nice knives. Personally I have 3 Manixs and always fight hard not to get a fourth (15V LW) so I am not in the same situation. I also made list with the idea of variety so your whole collection is not just 15V.

Keepers:

Shaman - Satin M4 OD Green Micarta - (15V and S90V are awesome but the Shaman is a big beefy knife for hard work that would benefit from the toughness of M4)

PM2 - Blurpule s110v - (15V you will have in the similar sized Manix, Cruewear is similar to your M4 Shaman. s110V gives you a stainless in your collection.)

Manix 2 - 15v BBB - (REX-45 is great but you have to keep the original first 15V release. It will be your one 15V in your collection)

Endura - K390 - (hap40/sus10 and zdp-189 are fine but K390 is a great do anything steel that is well balanced)
Endura AUS-8, Manix 2 S30V, Manix 2 LW MagnaCut, BBB 15V Manix 2, BBB 15V Para 3 LW, Alcyone BD1N, PM2 Micarta Cruwear, Native 5 Maxamet (2nd), Para 3 Maxamet (2nd), Magnacut Mule, Z-Wear Mule, REC Para 3 10V, Pacific Salt SE H2, Dragon Fly SE H2, Chaparral SE XHP, Shaman Burlap S90V, Bodacious SPY27, Manix 2 LW 15v, Sage 5 REX-121 LW.

Get rid of the ones you don’t like and the ones that are recommended you keep by others. Other wise, you will just have a bunch of what others like and nothing special to you personally.

Example… the one and only magnacut, that I have, would be the first to go… popularity is the enemy of unique.

Dang, I am glad I don't have to part with any of mine like these. First off, I want to say the obvious here, I would buy either one or both of your Manix2 's, right now lol, so you want to keep those, keep all the Endura's, how do you get any better than those lol.

Heck second thought here, I would just find a place to put them and not part with any of them. I would just make myself miserable trying to figure out which ones and why.

As long as they're not beat up, you should get most of, if not all or a little more money back than you spent on those models listed.

I personally would keep the following.

Shaman - M4/contoured micarta, tough to beat that combo! M4 not being quite as common these days either, great flavor to have in the collection.

PM2 - 15V. Iconic knife in an iconic steel.

Manix - Rex45...personally my favorite Spyderco knife, also a not so common steel these days.

Endura - K390. Having a large piece of K390, I never heard any complaints, also helps keep a variety in your scale color options amongst your knives.

I would get rid of Shaman’s in 15v and M4. Shaman in S90V is a great work knife in a Stainless.
The PM2 in 15V is a keeper over the 110 as 110 is always around if you miss it, and I’m not a big Cruwear fan.
The Manix in 15V is the hands down winner here over the Rex 45. The Rex is good but I feel the 15v is an amazing steel in an amazing model as well as the first “Born” in 15v. The 15V Manix is my most used knife. Although a K390 Manix might replace it if available in the future.
To me the K390 Endura is the complete package-great knife with my up to now favorite steel.

Frankly though, I would keep all of them. A great group of knives.

Keep

Shaman- Knife center exclusive
Pm2- DLT exclusive
Manix- rex45, and 15v
Endura- zdp-189

No rhyme or reason just what I would do.

Not the answer you're looking for, but I'd keep all of those!😄

Forced, I'd keep, S90V shaman, cruwear pm2, 15V manix, k390 endura. Gives you a great mix of steels.

Nope, nope, nope, and nope! Keep them all. Ok glad I got that out of my system. Did I mention keep them all? Need a reason? They’re all phenomenal steels. Need another Crucible went bankrupt so in the future you won’t be able to replace them. OK I’m going to go and curl up in a ball and recover from this traumatic thread.

The 15V Manix 2 is a really hard to replace knife. Definitely a keeper here. Given your desire for variety lets go with

Manix 2 15V
PM2 15V
Shaman S90V
Endura Hap40

Thats a tough call. Every once in a while I think about selling one or two. Then I find a reason not to.

I would probably get rid of one of the Enduras. Since I'm not a huge fan of backlocks. But I also understand your conundrum about steel variety.

There really is no easy choice. You'll just have to bite the bullet a pick one.

My personal keepers of the above:

Manix 2 - 15V. Personally like both the M2 and the PM2 but prefer the Manix so it gets the 15V, which (along with K390) is my steel preference of all you have listed.

Endura - K390.

PM2 - Cruwear, since you don't want to just keep all the 15V. (If you need stainless a lot maybe S110V here.)

Shaman - sell all, buy S30V Bodacious.😛 Or maybe wait for SPY27 since Sal at least has a sample. This also gets you a stainless model for when you don't want to rust all your beautiful K390/15V.

Shaman is just thicker than I want/need in a folder. Move 'em all on, if it's up to me.

edit - @cjk had the same conclusion while I was typing, haha

First of all, which ones do you reach for and use the most? Those are your keepers.

Anything still in production should be the first to go, in case you change your mind. Though I can see how parting with a k390 Endura could be tough.

Lastly... I shouldn't be giving advice. I've intended to thin my herd for years, and so far I've failed terribly.

If it were me I'd keep the K390 Endura, one of the other Enduras for a more corrosion resistant option, and sell the rest to fund purchases of models I like better.

If I had to keep at least one of each model?

K390 Endura, Rex45 Manix, 15V Para 2, S90V Shaman.

That'd give me plenty of steel variety.
