Collectors Club #001

#1

Post by wrdwrght »

I’ve noticed a flood of Spydies on eBay described as being “#001 HOLY GRAIL!!!”.

I assume #001 is a Collector Club reference. Is that why these Spydies are holy grails, or is there a presumption of who or what #001 is?

Thoughts, if not facts?

Yes, it’s the Collectors Club number. AFAIK, the owner of that number is Jeff Loffer, the founder and owner of the Cutlery Shoppe.

I seem to recall CS selling off some old pieces recently, likely from Jeff's personal collection. Not 100% certain about Jeff owning CC #001, but thank you for bringing the listing to the forum. That 440V millie is on my radar.

Jeff told me specifically at a Blade Show that was his number. I remember him also mentioning Gail is 002.

Certainly not a Holy Grail, it's still extra unwanted engraving to me.

Yep. Unless the number belonged to someone I know that made it meaningful it is just distracting and I always wish it wasn't there. It only serves as a remainder I bought someones unwanted knife for more than they paid. It would have to be something I wanted pretty badly.

The coolness of holding CC #001 status is not transferable IMO. The etching is a detractor to me.

Jeff is a great guy and I have had nothing but baller experiences with CS. If I had to have a CC# on a blade having 001 would be better than 002. That said the collector club number reminds me of the soliloquy that Ruger ruins their guns with

Thanks all for the clarifications.

FYI, I, too, don’t want CC#s on my blades, but I did buy an Ansø Rock Jumper with a CC# because my patience had worn thin.

When do CC knives come out to members ? Do CC members get the knives at the beginning of a release ? MG2

I have bought from that seller. none of the cc 001 though

he is not the original cc member from what I recall. while his prices on the 001 pieces are higher than I would consider paying, he has nice rare examples of older spydercos. He is a good seller and is willing to be flexible .

one thing about the numbered knives. I don't find any thing special about them other than they tend to be in mint or near mint condition on the secondary market. People willing to expend that kind of money on such knives on the whole take outstanding care of them

Yeah those are the very first runs off the line, so in a way, they are the first to check and see production quality for the first 200 examples (beyond internal QC) before normal consumers see their pieces... Not sure if that feedback is still relayed back in the same way.
