Stupid question time…

I was admiring my Maxamet Sage 1 just now and it occurred to me…

How many people out there have this as their SOLE pocket knife? Same thing with the Amalgam or K2 or really, any “slightly offbeat” Spyderco. Are there people out there running around with just a Phoenix because they thought it looked really cool? I have to imagine the answer to that is “yes” but then I figure…how do they make their way to such a knife in a world that’s flooded with various Tenaci and PM2age…

Just a thought…possibly not even worth a post…but hay…

When I used to frequent everydaycarry.com, there would be the few people who would post the exact same items all the time, but just rearrange them. Or maybe they’d place them on a different backdrop. This would often happen on back-to-back days. I always laughed, and thought… this person understood the assignment.

For me, probably the most “offbeat” knife I currently own is a Matriarch 2. I doubt it would work as a one and only carry for me.

Well, if you aren't carrying it everyday, it can't very well be called an everyday carry.

I can't confirm it was her only carry, but I was thinking about vintage designs today and I know Kristi carried an ATR. So today I carried mine. It is interesting to think about. I can't recall if my C41 Native was first or my stainless handled Stretch.

I used to work at a knife shop in college. We did sharpening among other things. Yes, some folks are definitely carrying weird stuff as their only knife.

The two best examples I can think of from my knife shop days are: a guy who carried a cold steel Espada every day, and a guy who carried a fully serrated Endura in ZDP-189. The latter brought his knife in for sharpening once every couple of years.

This probably qualifies as a stupid question. Why do the Delica, Endela, and to a lesser extent the Endura have the curved drop-off from the spine down to the tip? I'm guessing for extra tip strength, but especially the Native Chief has a very acute tip and I don't worry about breaking it (I guess I feel that if I break the tip then I was probably doing something stupid). Thanks for your answer!

Just going to mention the Delica as that's what I'm more familiar with. Earlier versions of the Delica (1 through 3) had a pointier tip. The Delica 4 was released with a less pointy tip. Reason being for a stronger tip that was less prone to break & be sent back. When the Delica 4 was released, there were a lot of complaints on various forums about the less pointy tip. Of course, a lot of people pointed out that if you wanted a pointier tip it was an easy DIY project.

I believe the Endura blade changes were the same as the Delica. As for the Endela it came out after the current 4th version of the Delica & Endura. As such it was probably designed with a similar blade profile.

Though I think op did not intend this thread to become a place for any "stupid question", but rather for inputs on just his own particular one, I'll give my thoughts on yours (and of course both questions are not stupid in reality):

- Yes, the drop towards the tip does strengthen it... I can recall Sal saying that this change was made indeed to make it less likely for customers to snap the tip (older iterations of Endura and Delica did have a pointier one)

- I personally think this is a very good thing! The Endura/Delica 4 tip is still pointy enough, but one can now beat on the knife a bit more should need be... with an all purpose EDC knife I don't feel like it is "doing something stupid" if a task includes some light prying or drilling.
And there are those scenarios where one has to work in a bit of a hurry and just can't be super careful with a very fine tip.

- Most important to me though:

One can always mod the Endura/Delica 4 tip into a pointier shape without loosing cutting edge length

While if the tip came super pointy and one would ADD the drop diy, this WOULD mean sacrificing a bit of edge.

The Cobra hood is one design that I really wish had caught on with more designs. I wouldn't mind it being there on a Military 1/2 for example.

I'll second that. Easier opening and more comfortable when using the thumb ramp.

It was a Spy-DK and I seem to be one of the select few who realized his tongue in cheek "groundhog day" joke. I even had a T-shirt with a print of his Spy-DK on a wooden table. Brilliant!

I agree with you both. The hood (at least on the ATR) is a nice balance between thumbstud and Spydiehole. Unobtrusive for sharpening but proud enough to aid deployment and really spreads the surface pressure out on the thumb for intensive work on harder media.
