I don't recall if anyone brought thia up but would any of you want Spyderco to make folders or fixed blades with treated leather handles like some companies do, or that doesn't interest you?

Do you mean like that stacked leather on Ka-Bar and SOG Bowies ?

I'd like to see material made of epoxy soaked leather strips like this, so that when it's machined into a scale it'll look like a stacked leather handle. I've asked a couple scale makers but nobody has seen anything like this so the material itself will need to be custom made and then who knows how well it'll machine.

That would look awesome.

It's possible with linen, burlap, canvas, denim, even paper. So to my non-materiel-expert mind, leather doesn't seem like too far of a stretch

I figured even if leather alone wouldn't be rough enough, if it had a thin sheet of G10 underneath it for support it would also work.

What about doing something similar to the handle on the ZT0223?

I do not own one of those knives but I like them a lot. The thing that has always held me back are the stick tang. After watching videos attesting to the tangs toughness, it is possible that I was worried for nothing, but I still stayed away from them.

If Spyderco came up with a fixed blade with a thicker tang, and leather washers, OK then, I'd probably buy one assuming the blade profile is excellent. Maybe something with a Magnacut steel. Maybe a 5 to 6 inch blade? OK lets do this!

Not interested at all because of our humid climate. I don't even like leather sheaths on fixed blades.

A stacked leather handle on a Mule would be nice, though I'm trying to think of how to accomplish it given the dimensional variations in that area. The inside of each layer will be slightly different and not something that can be easily slid in from the end of the handle. Perhaps a bevel cut at the bottom edge may work. You could cut the inside as needed for that layer, open the bevel, and slip it over the side of the handle. Is there another way to accomplish this? :thinking

Many years ago, Spyderco introduced a Japanese style fixed blade called the Kumo. On the handle, it had epoxy saturated wraps over an underlayer of tough pebbled stingray skin. I guess that would qualify as a kind of leather?

I would be satisfied with that.

Totally doable. “Stabilized wood” is wood impregnated with epoxy resin in a vacuum chamber. No reason it wouldn’t work on leather.

For a one-off I think you could do it yourself with thin CA glue.

I'd like to see something with leather inlays, similar to what CRK did with the Sebenza many years ago.

Might very well be uneducated layman - thinking, but I, well, think, that leather as a handle material works better on fixed blades, where it can literally be wrapped around the handle, than on folders (where one obviously can´t wrap material around the whole handle).

That said: I personally would find a leather handle Spydie to be really cool, regardless if fixed blade or folder (howsoever they´d do this on the latter).
Top three going by pocket-time (update October 25):
- EDC: Endela SE (K390). Endela SE (VG10), Manix 2 LW (REX45)
- Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 2 SE (LC200N), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1)

Another thread polls about a redo. So, how about a water buffalo inlay on a Kopa?

What I was talking about probably wouldn't even feel like leather anymore, or wouldn't be soft anyway. It would (ideally) look like a stacked leather handle but would probably feel more like some kind of micarta.

I love the idea, but i'm afraid machining/milling epoxy soaked leather would be akin to milling gingerbread..
