Well, @brj, you and your bad example have set me back a short stack of benjamins. It's kinda cool, clearly better than any of the OTF's I've had in years past. The handle isn't giant and bulky like I expected, and the blade seems adequately usable. This might turn out to be a good EDC knife.
Glad to have helped ;) .
How was initial sharpness out of the box? Microtech used to be hit or miss but they seem to be getting more consistent lately.

I can confidently say that 100% of Microtech's edges are very nice, based on by sample size of one. All I've done with it, though, is shave some hair off both arms, open a plastic bag, and poke myself in the finger.

Thanks man, I like them too ;)

Cypher over my manly-colored wool gaiter

Tested the mechanism a bit, left the Cypher at -8 celsius (17.6 fahrenheit) for 30 mins, brought it inside for 2 mins, then fired it 2 times in rapid succession, it deployed and retracted with zero issues.

I changed my mind. You're right. Shaving arm hair is one thing, but doing real work is altogether different.

After the honeymoon period where the knife just sits in my pocket and gets used for silly things like opening the mail, I actually needed the knife to do real things today. The first thing up was cutting celery for my breakfast. I held out the celery and whacked it with the blade, and it didn't just slide right through. My knives NEVER get that dull.

Later I was cutting up t-shirts to use as rags, and it took a lot of pressure and sawing. Clearly, the edge wasn't good enough. I've become spoiled with Spyderco's bevels and edges.

Out came my sharpening tools and I started making the edge more to my liking. After I while I got bored and went back out to the garage to finish cutting rags. The edge isn't yet perfect, but it's far better than it came from the factory. I'll use it a while as is and then make it better.

Yes, out of everything I've tried so far I'd say only the Microtech Cypher II with a wharnie blade profile and the Benchmade Shootout have somewhat approached the notion of 'slicers'.

You can of course regrind 'em to your liking, even D/E, this CT is now roughly 18.5 DPS and cuts satisfyingly, but resharpening has been a real PITA to be honest and I wouldn't be re-attempting anything similar anytime soon.

Glad I'm not the only one reprofiling their Microtechs, it seems like so many just buy them for fidget toys.

I'd recommend thinning them out to at least below 20 degrees per side as you've done, and then you can touch up the edges on a Sharpmaker using the 20 degree slots. Even with 4 bevels this shouldn't be a hassle.

I've reprofiled all of mine, to heck with resale value. It definitely helps but they're still not great slicers.

Really taking a shine to the Boker AK1, shown here with my current rotation - well, except for the Native Chief, in there more from a 'matte CF goodness' angle ;)

And with the other small fixies that I sometimes carry

As I mostly favor right front pocket, the only drawback to Dacian and ARK carried there is they poke me in the ribs when tying my shoelaces :winking-tongue , but the AK1 is exactly where it (ideally) should be.

Hey, @brj. Got any advice on these newfangled Microtechs?
I've had this thing exactly three weeks, used it ever so slightly, and it started failing to deploy reliably. I douched it out as described in the video, and then it started failing to retracted. So I disassembled it and cleaned it and adjusted it at least ten times last night. I'm getting nowhere. Any thoughts? My brain is ready to explode.

Hey man, sorry to hear that. Never had trouble with any of my OTFs (apart from spring sing) but then I run them almost bone dry, with very minimal (to none) lube. Maybe a thorough cleanup with just tiny drops of oil might perk up the action again?

I've played with my ZBP for a couple of weeks only before getting back to my customary rotation system, it has remained strong with no misfires and no bladeplay. Out of the "how-to-tune-the-action" movies out there I thought this one has the most useful level of detail, check it out.

Hope these help.

Thanks for the support. Getting it working involved disassembling and reassembling the knife at least twenty times. I ended up stoning a couple surfaces on the lockup end of the blade. It's now 100% reliable, but the only true test will be carrying it in my pocket and using it in real life situations.

The button on this knife looks great, but it is absurdly unergonomic. I'm not ready to throw down $60 on an aftermarket button, especially when it's unclear whether the knife will be reliable enough to carry around and use. Maybe one of these days I'll make one out of aluminum. If it works out as intended but the aluminum isn't durable enough, then I can worry about making it out of something better.

Got a surprise cake for my better half's birthday. Used the Explorer in my pocket to trim down the provided stand (cardboard wrapped in aluminum foil) so it would fit our fridge.
