I’m obsessed! How do you control your urges?? I need help!!

NO! NO! You're doing fine!
When knives are compared to green fees that are in the hundreds of dollars, a round of drinks that is almost as much, not to mention the prices of all those goofy shoes and pants, then collecting a handful of knives is a BARGAIN. An unused knife is an asset. It holds its own value. Tell your wife that your knife obsession is really shrewd investing.

Well joining this forum certainly won't help with not buying Spydercos. I started with a Pm2 6 years ago and now have over 30 Spyderco and 50 others from various brands. Half my collection are $500 and up knives and this year I went nuts. Usually spend 3-5k a year on my knife hobby but 2024 I spent t 13k!!! Yikes thank god for unlimited overtime in my profession....

Well, there was a time when I was averaging 1 new Spyderco knife per month. So, can’t really help you much 😂

Now, this I totally agree with 😊

Asking us how not to buy too many knives is like asking a tiger for advice on how to become vegan...

The bug can get pretty severe. I’ve added 5 Spydercos to my collection in 2025 so far (to be fair, I gave one of them away right after).

I try to limit my collection to about 25 to 30 knives total (I have Spydercos and others as well). The great thing about Spyderco (and other higher end knives) is that they retain their value very well. So if yoiu see something new that you really want, you can always sell an older one in your collection to help finance the new one.

I buy most of my knives second hand on EBay and the Blade Binge website (I recently got a LNIB Para 3 exclusive with G10 and S35VN for $115). You have to be very careful though, because there are a lot of counterfeits out there. But if you do your homework, study the pictures, and ask the seller questions you can get GREAT deals on these websites. I've managed to never get scammed so far. Also, local pawn shops are another place where you can find really good deals on used knives. As others have said, the mainstream online knife stores run killer deals from time to time too (Blade HQ, Knifecenter, White Mountain Knives, etc). And the BentoBox website package deals are killer(buy one knife, then get a brand new S45VN PM2 for $138. Can't beat that with a stick)
S30V; S35VN; VG-10; BD1N; H1; SuperBlue/SUS410; 8Cr13MoV; Micro-Melt PD#1; REX-45; Cruwear; BD1; K390; Magnacut; HAP40/SUS410; 20CV; 15V; M4; SPY27; LC200N; S90V

I was bitten by the Spydie bug half a dozen years ago or better … or maybe it was just a knife bug.

Watched my collection grow at a rapid pace each year.

Thinking the venom is wearing out as I’ve seen my collection dwindle last year and now this year.

I’m parting with folders, fixed blades, and kitchen cutlery.

Maybe age will get you to this point…. Until then, good luck and enjoy.

Every reply above is absolutely logical folks! I gotta wash off the guilt of buying knives as I’m already eyeing out the “coming soon” Spydie Native 5 in 15V. I love its platform!

Well the only thing I know controls the Spyder bug is, running out of cash. Some good advice already posted about want vs need.

I have too many knives in general. With Spyderco I have tried to buy for use/need cases. Like the Waterway and Catcherman are fish knives, Para 3 small folder, Pacific Salt rust proof, Tenacious was a gift, and then there are the Mules. The Mule Team is a whole different problem, so many steels coming around and so easy to swap scales and have several knives for one.

I would agree the most practical way to control the Spyder bug is to use your knives and use them a lot. Sharpen when needed but take the time to sharpen well. I find when I am using stuff and doing things I do not have the time for shopping.
Spyderco: Tenacious G10, Waterway, Para 3 Spy27, Pacific Salt H1, Catcherman, In the Mule Team Stable(Z-Max, Z-Wear, S45VN, Magnacut, SRS13/SUS405, M398, Aeb-l, 15v)
