Compression lock mod for lefties
Compression lock mod for lefties
Just wanted to see if anyone has made a mod for the compression lock. I know there is the CME button that you can buy, but what fun is that. I use JB weld epoxy on the lock bar. Works really well and have never had one come off. I form it, once dry, to fit the cut-out on the opposite scale.

Re: Compression lock mod for lefties
Nice mod. The Sage 6 w/ the button on the left scale will be far more friendly to lefties than the standard compression lock. I have one of those Craftsman work knives w/ a reversed compression lock and a button (similar to yours) on the depressor, only its on the other side. I find it actually easier to manipulate in my left hand than in my right hand.
Also, using a knife w/ a standard plunge style button lock, the button is in a similar place like on the Sage 6, so I'm guessing its gonna be a good one for us lefties.

Nice work, @Ktrumm!
The right handed compression lock isn't very friendly to left handed people. There's a guy who sells something like you made, but it would grate upon me to pay so much for a tiny chunk of plastic. I was curious, so I bagged a PM2 and carved out a chunk of vulcanized fiber. I stuck it on with cyanoacrylate, fully expecting it to fail pretty quickly. Surprisingly, it's held up for however long it's been since this knife hit the streets.
The new functionality of the compression lock has convinced me to buy a Yojimbo, Yojumbo or both when the 15V versions are released. With this mod, there's no reason for a left-hander to forego a compression lock knife. I think the button makes it BETTER than original.

Much cooler to make such a piece oneself though!

Re: Compression lock mod for lefties
I'm a righty but I like them, much more comfortable on my finger and so far seems to also have solved my hot spot issue with the compression lock so I'll most likely be adding one of these to all my compression lock knives.

Dave did you use adhesive CME came with or something different ? Noticed OP used JB Weld epoxy ? I gifted one of these to a lefty friend for the Kapara , but never used one myself . Dan

These are interesting but I would probably be more confident in trying one if the attachment method was something other than just an adhesive. Even if it required drilling and countersinking a hole in the liner for a set screw, I would probably prefer that just for peace of mind that it's going to stay attached.

I used the super glue that's supplied with it, cleaned all surfaces with alcohol before installing and so far so good. If it breaks off I'll probably try to rough up the mating surfaces of both and try an epoxy.

Re: Compression lock mod for lefties
I've always thought the Compression lock worked better operated by my left hand. I just use my thumb to disengage the lock. It always felt more natural than trying to use the tip of my finger on my right hand.
But, that's just me.

This is what potentially could be the real advantage of that device for me, as well as perhaps easier operation with gloves (?)...
And, while i don’t find the attachment with "just" an adhesive ideal:
On the other hand if the thing should accidentally come off, nothing would actually be broken: One would just end up with a perfectly fine, regular comp.lock...

If you had one in titanium it would be possible to machine it all to work with a screw, but it may not be necessary. The glue works pretty well because the button isn't just glued "to the side", there is a little lip that hangs over the top edge of the lock tab, and the button really only sees force in the direction of where it's glued, or in other words you're never applying a force to it like you're trying to pull it off. It's a pretty low stress action so glue might be plenty. I could see it maybe popping off if you dropped it just right.

Re: Compression lock mod for lefties
I just added another to the sage5 salt in MagnaCut I just picked up. It’s the first thing I do to all my Spiderco’s. Never had one come off. I had to remove one when I returned a pm3 for warranty. I had to grind off from metal.
Re: Compression lock mod for lefties
Just to clear up any confusion. The entire button is JBWeld. I use hot glue to make a form around the lock bar, then add the JBWeld inside. Once it dries, I remove the hot glue and form the button to fit the scales. It takes a little time, but I like doing it myself.
