Do you ask if you see a clip?

#1

Post by Mr. Shawn »

Wherever I go, my eyes are drawn to people's pants and shorts pockets. I am always on the lookout for knife clips. If I see a clip and have the opportunity, I will ask the person what kind of knife he or she (have not yet seen any clips in women's pockets) carries. I will sometimes show my blade, hoping to generate a discussion about a common love of knives. I am even thinking about going to the local firehouse, which is next door to me, and asking the firefighters what they carry, in addition to thanking them for doing what they do.

Has anybody started a conversation after spotting a knife clip in someone's pocket?

:spyder: really it depends on how twitchy they act. I don't generaly like people drawing attention to the fact that I carry knives in public unless they're needed and I try to extend that to others. I live in one of the world centers of the politicaly correct. :spyder:

Aloha Mr. Shawn,

Funny ya mention this because I saw a patient at the doctors office with a clip in each pocket. I had no idea what they were, and had he not been such a grump and left in such a hurry, I'd have asked what they were.

I had a conversation at my Sis' in Laws wedding this past March with a guy whose child was crying during the festivities so he took him to the lobby. I noticed the clip on this guy during the wedding. Anyway, I went to the car to get something, and on my way back in, I asked the dude what he had in his pocket. LOL, he seemed kinda shocked. I was like, "Uh...lemme be more specific...Knife?" Then he laughed and he whips out a BM. I was carrying my Pacific at the time so I whip-clicked that one out. I told him how it is the best knife for the islandlife and he doubted me all the way regarding my H1 stories...oh well, his loss!

God bless and neat thread! :)

One time I was working with a temp. at my old job and I saw a clip, so I asked. We talked about knives for like 30min. It was a good way to make the shift a lot easier. :)

I've only done it once. I was playing indoor paintball and they had a cop watching. He had a big chrome clip with a spydie logo on it. I asked if he liked spydercos and whipped out the mili before he could answer. His response was "yup, but mine is just a seatbelt cutter". It was probably a police, he didn't whip it out. I always see people carrying and I spy them. I spy watches too. I only strike up conversation if I see a spydie or a non quartz watch. I'm into mechanical watches, mainly seikos. They're really nice and you can pick them up for around 40 bucks. I sniped a 100m diver for 37 bucks, because the guy took a crappy pic of it. I don't collect them though.

This thread is odd.

:spyder: the police is a bit too "stabby" to be just a seatbelt cutter. :spyder:

i work mostly in all the sh**y places in the world where you need an AK not a knife so asking guys what they have if i see a clip (which is quite often) is not a problem
and luckly some times its a :spyder:
no :spyder: 's at the minute though gerbers, bucks and emersons (he loves the wave)
but dont worry i fly the flag with my salt 1 at the minute ;)

better to have a knife and not need it

absolutely,
depending on where i am, but i always want to know what people carry and how it works for them, just part of gaining knowledge for retail cutlery sales. i had an older man stop me at a dary queen last year because he noticed 3 clips. I had my Native II in my rf pocket, an FRN dragonfly in the watch pocket, and a CE FRN Endura in the rb pocket. When he asked why so many, we ended up having a 30+ minute discussion about knives. He showed me what he carries, a kershaw scallion CE, and after handleing my Native for a bit he almost looked embarresed that he didnt know what kind of knife it was. Im betting he bought one soon after. But asking others is one of the best ways to gain knowledge about knives and how they perform. Granted you have to take what most people say w/ a grain of salt.

I'm always on the look out but I've never seen one. I don't think many people are into knives over here. Last holliday when I had my son over, we made trips to various places of the country. I always wore my green Spyderco cap with a yellow Pacific Salt pin attached to the frond. Never had a comment about it.

I'll ask if I know the person. Unfortunately, the last time I asked the knife was a Spydie knock-off. "$6.95. Pretty good deal, huh?" I just smiled.

Cheers,

What if you spotted an individual sporting an onbvious clip, and after approaching to inquire about the type of knife, it turns out to be a mundane object such as a pen, beeper, or similar item ?

That would certainly make for an awkward situation in my opinion, especially since some clips are extremely inconspicuous, such as the Meerkat's, with a simple wire clip, that rides low. :p

This is a pretty cool thread, something unique to knife people, and I would enjoy seeing people with clipit's, and the likes, however simply carrying any knife in my country, is prohibited, no matter what the design, or size.

Well, I don't remember I've seen too many people with clipped knives here, but if I have the opportunity to start a conversation with someone who carries a knife, I gladly do.
