Any updates on the future in-house coating?

#1

Post by cjk »

I've seen interviews where Eric talks about a new future coating which will be done in house. It evidently has similar or greater lubricity than a satin blade. It's also available in colors.

Have any models been released with the new coating yet?

Does the new coating also contribute to corrosion resistance?

I would be very interested to hear more about the new coating as well. Supposedly there are pvd style coatings that are even more wear resistant than dlc.

I thought it was the opposite. PVD being lower cost, but lower durability and thicker application... DLC being thinner with higher tolerance, and more durable, but cost much more.
At least that's how it is in other industries, such as cycling chains and motorcycle suspension stanchion coatings, etc.

I believe the issue is that DLC, while harder, is more prone to flaking off at edges and corners, so a coating that is harder than other types of PVD and has better adhesion than DLC would offer better protection overall.

Yeah makes sense, always compromise.

Granted a bike chain isn't ever sharpened and is (ideally) lubricated regularly, but under constant strain and friction. So I wonder how those companies get DLC to work so well.

Just a guess on my part but there may be different applications of DLC. Would the DLC used on Spyderco knives be the same as the DLC used on pistons in engines among other parts?

I do wish that someone from Spyderco would give us some more information about the new coatings. I am very interested. I would like to know what kind of tests that they have run on it. I would like to know how hard and how rust resistant it is. There are so many unknowns.

We're still involved in the care and feeding of the new machine. Once we have it nailed down, we'll begin.

Maybe, since the un-named coating comes in colors, it could be a bright yellow coating to match the scales. :winking-tongue

I had to do an image search. It really is “Dessert Warrior!” That is too funny, and more than a little bit weird. And I was thinking it was just a misspelling.
