Sage 5 - Rex 121

#1

Post by W3OY-RAY »

So… I just got my first knife is CPM Rex 121… I just wanted to see what other people’s experience has been? Is it really as scary for chips and the blade shattering? I basically use my EDC as a flicker and occasionally to open a package or envelope. I’m assuming it will be all good for me but I’d still like to see what others think since I’m sure there are guys here who have a good 6 months under their belt with it. Everyone has warned me about staples in cardboard, but I can’t imagine that being a huge issue since I’ve never encountered one before. Think I may keep my S30V in the bottom of the pocket if I ever need to cut something questionable.

Hopefully someone post some here. There isn’t really much information from AFTER people bought the knife. How it’s held up after “6 months etc.” type stories. I’m real curious. I don’t want to have to wait 6 months myself to learn 🤣

I have cut a bunch of cardboard with mine so far. No chipping and it doesn't even scratch up the sides easily, and no rust. I did put a polished edge on it almost immediately. I think it is a superb performing steel, and so long as you use it to cut things with you should never have a problem.
Also, kind of neat having a knife that can cut glass. I have a bottle sitting on my desk with all sorts of scribe marks. :winking-tongue

Also be aware that if you do start to notice little chips from your use case you can always change the angle on the blade to 20DPS or even higher. Additionally, you can put a micro bevel on it to help increases edge toughness and minimize chips.

I have two Maxamet knives and have had minimal issues with them, it's a pretty similar steel.

I've used knives in REX121 from Farid for the past 12 years or so, but they're a completely different style of knife from the Sage 5.
I convexed the grinds on the Farid knives (very thick bladestock), and I haven't sharpened them since. I've just stropped on loaded leather or paper wheels.
I have found that Spyderco's REX121 sharpens/polishes easier than the K2 and Mule from Farid.
No problems with chipping or edge deformation, but I've only used the Sage5 to cut leather, plants/saplings, insulating foam, etc. Nothing particularly hard, but maybe abrasive. Made feather sticks for the **** of it, which I've also used my Farid knives for.
Ti junkie. Steel snob. Voids warranties.
