Rock Lobster ricasso

Post by FX sniper »

Any reason why the ricasso on the Rock Lobster is so wide? The custom Anso and even the Spydiechef have much smaller areas.

Does it provide some kind of lock support when closed? Or no function at all and it can be widened?

I’ve never handled that knife but looking at it one thing that jumps out is you need that flat for the lock detente to rest on.

It was probably done as safety measure. It gets the thumb out of the path of sharpened blade edge. If the blade is pushed closed with the thumb or finger still pressing the lockbar, that flat portion of blade is what contacts the thumb. If it was sharpened edge, there would be greatly increased risk of accidentally cutting the thumb while closing the blade.

Aside from that, that flat section is not necessary for the knife to function. As long as the contact point on the blade tang still interfaces with the stop pin properly, that small flat section of blade could be sharpened.

Only the back end of the flat section contacts the stop pin. Other than that, it's not functionally necessary aside from decreasing the risk of accidental injury while closing the knife.

Being a back lock, the JD Smith is a different scenario. That flat section might actually be functionally necessary for the blade to close properly.

The slabs on the custom one just extend further forward so more of that part of the blade are covered.

I am clearly and certainly an outlier when it comes to this, but I´d actually prefer that kind of ricasso for choking up in it over most dedicated finger choils... ;) (most likely also true for the Rock Lobster ricasso)
Top three going by pocket-time (update October 25):
- EDC: Endela SE (K390). Endela SE (VG10), Manix 2 LW (REX45)
- Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 2 SE (LC200N), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1)
