Sage 5 LW vs. Sage 5 G10

#1

Post by Halfneck »

I was looking at getting a Sage 5 LW in Spy27 steel & started looking at the G10 version. Came here with some observations/questions.

The LW version is only 0.2 oz lighter - is that even noticeable?
I really liked how the LW felt in-hand - is the G10 version thicker?
Other than the + $55 or so price for the G10, are there any other differences?

Thanks

Have 2 LW - Rex and spy and love them. Big fan of the texturing on this model.

Would be interested in opinions as well of direct comparison.

I have plenty of others sydercos in G10 (including an M390 para 3 which is similar size to the sage but doe t present a side by side comparison). For some reason (not only $) gravited to the FRN for the Rex 121 and then again for the Spy27).

Will have to wait for another steel in sage 5 before I grab one in G10

Total package much higher quality compared to my FRN K390s but the action is a lot more precise on the sage so not exactly apples to apples. (And love my FRN K390s!)

Following. I'm curious too. I've handled the Sage 5 G10 version and the maxamet Sage 1. Taichung does the G10 very well. On the flip side, the Taichung FRN is my favorite pattern. Looks and feels amazing.

Does anyone know if the FRN version has PB washers. I’m assuming the G10 version does?

Yeah, the LW Sages have washers and full steel liners.

The standard model LW is really nice. That and the chap have the best build of any of my FRN Spydies.

I think you will like it.

Does the G10 model still have that one slightly longer pin that makes it incompatible with scales designed for the LW?

Yes they both have a pivot bushing. The newest g10 and LW frn have the same feature and steel liners, pivot bushings, etc. That’s why there’s very little weight difference between the LW and the G10, at least now. I have to say, I have the g10 Rex 121 Sage 5 and it’s the highest quality Spyderco I have out of about 15 of them, to include other nice Taichung models. Taichungs are definitely the most refined. While I like the G10/cf laminate, I wish more Taichung models came in g10 and other materials because they do it right, especially with the pivot bushings.

Thank you. I've often wondered this, but couldn't find an answer.

Fine, though it's not been carried since I got a new Delica over Christmas

Tough to argue with the slicey Delica.

I've been having a thing recently for that crisp Sage 5 action though.

We made the FRN version to be able to provide what you have been requesting; the Sage with other variations in steel and color at a more affordable price. My wife Gail carries the G-10 and I generally carry the FRN.

The pattern was designed many years ago to showcase locks for folding knives. While we're still working on that format, the pattern was versatile enough to expand.

In fact, today, I'm carrying the Sage 5 in MagnaCut (Larrin's blend), yellow. I'm pleased with the result of the efforts of the Spyderco team. It's a nice piece.

Sal, I love that Sage 5 and picked up one myself, along with the Maxamet LW model to accompany the excellent G10 Rex 121 Sage 5.

Gail likes G-10 and you like FRN, how do you ever hold your marriage together?

In all seriousness the Sage 5 is on a short list for me to get. Seems like it sits nicely between the Para 3 and Native 5 in design. REX-121 has been calling me for a while but the do anything SPY-27 is hard to say no to, Spyderco never makes it easy with all the choices. G-10 vs FRN really depends on the knife for me. As an example, I like the Para 3 in FRN but I like the Manix in G-10. Not sure where I will land on the Sage, it's a coin flip.

If you don't have anything with REX121, it's a must have for me, it's awesome once you have honed it about the fourth time.

Only complaint I have is we can't get REX121 in something bigger lol...
