I want to get my first Shaman, was waiting for a neat spirt release with a tool steel, but this one is pretty tempting, if it did not sell out so fast.

What is the basis for your statement? We don't think that the price is unfair for the product. We operate on relatively fixed margins. Pricing is based on costs to produce. We believe that "to charge as much as he market will bear is to bit the hand that feeds you". Why do you think the price is absurd?

There are two ways to answer this kind of question.

One is how Sal answered it. Which is basically to say the price is determined by the cost to manufacture plus (I’m interpreting) a fixed margin. In other words, it can’t be priced lower and be the same knife made in the same location. Not absurd.

The other is to say there is an upper bound on what you are willing to pay for a knife. In this sense, yes, $270+ for a knife is absurd. You can buy a cheap handgun for that price.

Both answers are true. No need to beat this dead horse. If it’s over your price limit (it’s way out of mine) then it’s not a knife you should consider.

When I see these comments I also think k it might also just be “inflation” shock in general. I don’t think they are always a true reflection of comparing a Spyderco Shaman to the price of a similar knife from a competitor.

I mean I just paid $2.79 for a candy bar, we feels like they were $.49 when I was a kid and only $.99 not that long ago. There is now way a candy is worth $3.

I missed these shamans this time, sold out on Spyderco extremely fast. When it does come back in stock I will probably buy one and be my first Shaman. Excited for this one.

I wonder too how much it costs to provide all the models in all the steels we request and in plain or serrated, coated or uncoated with different handle materials, etc. if we want this much variety I’m sure it costs some extra cash. They could do every model in S30V and FRN only and charge according.

I don’t know how they do their accounting but in the area I’ve worked in consumer goods we had a concept of “blended margins” where you’d make more money on the higher tier product variants and could then afford to make a little less on the base model. In that scenario removing the more expensive trims raises the cost of the base trim.

The money always has to come from somewhere. Plus if people keep buying more expensive versions of course Spyderco will keep making them.

i was under the impression that price points like this was for more exotic steels or sprint runs. isn't spy27 a more basic steel? granted i am far from an expert on this. these are actual questions not shots being taken and im basing it partly on mule pricing.

Part of the sentiment is what makes this cost more than the cf/s90v military 2 I just bought. Actual question.

edit: i guess if the scales are milled that could be part of it

edit 2: for the most part i havent seen too many sticker shock models that arent "special". the only ones so far have been shaman bodacious and to an extent lil native for me personally.
