Giant Roadie

#1

Post by naggalowmo »

I used to be the type that would never look at a slipjoint always wanting a strong lock and overbuilt tanks. But as I've grown older I realized i didn't need a tank. The roadie looked like a nice design and was inexpensive enough to try so I bought one and I loved it. Surprisingly, it's one of my favorite knives  I love the round divot for an opener and the choil that sets it self apart from traditional slipjoints that I never had interest in.

Now with the release of the Benchmade 319 Proper, I realized how much i would love to have a giant Roadie with a 2.5-3in blade and micarta handles. Just wondering if there were any plans for something bigger than the standard Roadie? Maybe a flash batch? ;)

If the blade was thinned out, I'd like a 2.5".

I've been eyeing that but it doesn't have the divot opener which i think is genius and one of the best features.

Hi Naggalowmo,

Thanx for the kind words and I'm glad you like the design. Lotta thought went into that one. I'll watch the thread.

I haven't broken down and picked on up yet because of the size. If it were around 3" I would be all in.

What is the blade thickness? I hope it is thinner than the regular Roadie.

Cool design and I want to get one in hand.

Hey Doc. The Reveal catalog lists the thickness as .108" or 2.8mm.

I like it, but I immediately thought that I would like a slip joint version of the Kiwi 4 a lot more, even if it meant changing from a usable thumb hole to a nail nick or that dimple or something to prevent it from being one hand opening.

I wonder if these have a half stop and how they compare to the G10 UKPK.

7 year old conversation. Just shows how new concepts can take a long time to grow, refine, mature and serve a the customer. I like to think of it as a "Safe Portable Edge". The blade is the same thickness. It does have a half-stop. It's not really a "Giant". blade length is under 3", 2-1/4" cutting edge, effective finger choil, safe, convenient, with a clip.

This is a concept that began with a knife legal for airline flights. Once we began working with models, it became obvious, that the concept in a larger size would be like a simple slip-joint that did't lock and was not one-hander, that would meet many legal requirements in this changing world, but still perform well when "cutting".

I like the original Roadie. My only complaint is that I would prefer a thinner, more slicey blade. I don't pry. Think Case Peanut or something. I love everything else about the design and have bought many for gifts.

However, you just know I have to buy one of these. I like the looks. it looks close to a design that I posted here on the forum. It's not exact, but it has similar lines and so therefore I'm gonna like it.

I overlooked the wire clip at first but these look great with the wire clip. Makes me wonder how it affects the ergonomics in hand. :thinking
