Reveal 16! Live!
Re: Reveal 16! Live!
Going by the pictures Spyderco have decided to omit the full length backspring / 4-pin construction that the G10 HH UKPK had. It’s a 3-pin in the photo.
Unless it’s just a cut and paste photo of the FRN model?

Roadie XL and G-10 Grasshopper are intriguing me, believe it or not! Oh yeah, the Gooney is interesting, too. Just wish it had serrations!!

Wow, I was really not prepared for this Reveal.
Didn't see the 15V Sprints coming. I've been really enjoying my Manix 2.
What I'm really waiting for is Shawn's folder...

Re: Reveal 16! Live!
Fun Fact about the Gooney -
This knife was created from a sketch submitted here by forum user @Albatross four years ago!
Also, you are correct to say the blade looks like the bill of a "Gooney" (also known as an "Albatross."
) That was the design intent.
This knife has a fun back story that, probably, not many people are aware of -
In an unrelated thread asking about a K390 Shaman, Sal answered a question from Albatross but ended the post with a question of his own -

So, thats that! In a matter of four forum posts in a totally unrelated thread, the Gooney was born. In a way, it's kind of like the "Jazz Delica," except this is the "Albatross Harrier 2." Gotta love Spyderco!

As anyone would do, Albatross provided input and a sketch!
Boom - Sal likes it! Short and sweet response.Albatross wrote: ↑Fri Mar 20, 2020 9:07 amHi Sal,

Wow, I'm flattered you would ask my opinion on a potential model. Given the agressive look Albatrosses have, I think a Wharncliffe blade would be perfect. It also would be a nice nod to the shape of the Albatross' beak. The Byrd line seems to be missing a good utility Wharncliffe blade. Since the CaraCara 2 is 4", it might not make sense to go larger, unless the market is there for it. A 3-3.5" blade, hump-less, Wharncliffe, in a budget line, would be perfect for no-nonsense tradesmen and do-it-yourselfers. I do have a very rough sketch of a Wharncliffe blade I've been dreaming of.

Quick confirmation from Albatross -
Four years later here we are in Reveal 16 with the "Gooney" as an upcoming release.

Re: Reveal 16! Live!
One thing I'm curious about - what happened to the in-house coating that was to replace DLC? The Para 3 Salt still isn't using it; I guess it's delayed for now?
Edit - Also, in the images it looks like the Native 5 / Chief CruCartas have PB washers, so are those running directly on micarta, or are there actually liners? The listed weights make it hard to believe liners are involved on either model...

Great to see this come to fruition.

Re: Reveal 16! Live!
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the Gooney the first locking Byrd made sans liners? That's even more exciting to me than the 9Cr14 blade steel.
Re: Reveal 16! Live!
I'm hoping that enough folks dislike the Yojimbo 2 that I'll finally be able to try some 15V. If not, there's still the CruCarta Native 5 to look forward to, despite it being more expensive than the CruCarta Manix 2.
Looks like an excellent Reveal with something for everyone. Thanks, Spyderco!

Re: Reveal 16! Live!
Some cool stuff for sure! Not trying to sound ungrateful but I'd like to see more new models instead of more variations of the same ones. I was excited to see the Crucarta Native 5 until I remembered that I already have a Native 5 with TeroTuf scales. I may get a Sage 5 Salt or another G10 UKPK. We'll see

Pretty hyped on the Crucarta Native Chief!
I still need to buy my Crucarta Millie 2 though.

I'm happiest with Micarta and Tool Steel.
Top four in rotation: K390 + GCM PM2, ZCarta Shaman, Crucarta PM2, K390 + GCM Straight Spine Stretch.

Re: Reveal 16! Live!
- The Reveal does say the Gooney has no liners indeed... what´s a bit weird though:
It still has the same weight (3.4 oz) as the Harrier (which appearantly has the same handle and just an a tad shorter blade) - but the Harrier features "minimalist nested steel liners" according to the Spyderco site.
- What I like: The upgrade in steel (from 8CR (Harrier) to 9CR (Gooney) does not reflect in the prices (Harrier MSRP 74, Gooney 75).
Wonder if there´ll perhaps be a "rolling change" from 8CR to 9CR in ALL Byrd knives - ?
- Anyway :The Gooney is really something to try out!
Decent price point, the for Spyderco "new" 9CR steel, of course the interesting blade shape and for me the very "low" and probably a bit more robust tip (two features I like in a tip)

Re: Reveal 16! Live!
The Nand is cool. I like the Roadie XL too, and for me, the biggest surprise were the Bugs with G10 and 12C27. I will get a Grasshopper for certain.

Re: Reveal 16! Live!
The Crucarta Native Chief, Roadie XL and 15V Yojumbo have my interest.
I remain hopeful that we’ll see some SE options of the Manix XL and crucarta models in the future. I would REALLY love a crucarta SE Chaparral one day.

I might try out the Nand, supposing the actual sharpening job is better than the one pictured.
Apart from that I've no interest in the further McDonalds-ization of the lineup

Re: Reveal 16! Live!
And again I wish the Native 5 would work better for me in ergos and as a cutting tool (don´t get me wrong, it is a good knife no doubt, but just for my hand and use Delica or Chap are better in that size range) - as I always say: To me it probably is the coolest looking Spydie, even more so with the Micarta the Curcarta version offers...

The NAND looks super cool and it’s a fun new unconventional design from Spyderco but to me it feels like an odd choice at the moment. A very unique design but I have trouble projecting where the market might be for it.
Is it meant to compete in the traditional slipjoint market? Because it looks like it’s from the year 3024 - there’s not all that much traditional about it.

Don’t get me wrong, I like the design a lot and love that Spyderco is taking the chance on designs like this again. It feels like a good sign of things to come in the future. (Or should I say from the future?

I still plan to buy a NAND at some point but I also bought a Parata so I probably don’t count as their targeted market, since I’ll buy anything with their logo on it.

Also, as fun as flash batches are, this one might be the least exciting so far because it’s just a smaller version of the Spymyto. (Which was already kind of lackluster in itself) Then the blade comes in at 2.56” which technically makes it illegal to carry in jurisdictions with a 2.5” blade length restriction. I do love flash batches but I would’ve been okay if they skipped this one.
Re: Reveal 16! Live!
Quite an interesting reveal:
- SPY27 Shaman, might be my first Shaman
- S110V LW Chief - might get this one instead of the SPY27 for my first LW chief as I love s110v and the price will probably be similar
- all the 15V! A bit sad they are sprint runs as it will be hard to get them but hope I manage to snatch a Millie 2 to accompany my reground s110v m2
