Tape residue remedy

#1

Post by JHanna »

Hey Guys! It's been awhile.

This past weekend I was cutting up some boxes with my Military. Following this chore I noticed that there was a considerable buildup of packing tape residue on the blade. What's the most effective way to remove this without discoloring or damaging the blade? Thanks in advance.

Greetings! :)
I have used both Tuf-Cloth, which has tuf-oil in it, and Flitz polish to clean crud like that off of my blades. Both work fine, but there are probably quite a few other methods to remove that stuff without hurting the metal's finish. Probably warm soapy water would also do the trick... You could try some lube on a rag and carefully rub it off, minding the edge at all times. (Duh- Like you wouldn't...) I use Militec for oiling my blades, and it works good to remove stuff like that, too. I'm sure others will throw in their methods for removing gunk like this from their knives. :D

Go to your local Drug Store such as Eckerd, Walgreen, Osco or whatever good drug chain you have locally. Go to the shelf where their Rubbing Alcohol is. They usually have 2 strengths of of rubbing alcohol. They usually have 67% and 91%. Get the 91%. It's usually only a couple of bucks for a 16 ounce bottle. Just use a little rubbing alcohol on a cloth and that tape residue just melts right off. It is also a good way to clean up excess lubrication and old lubrication sediment that builds up on the moving parts of the knife. It doesn't seem to have any corrosive properties to speak of at all. I use 91% rubbing alcohol on quite a few tools and other items I work with. It's cheap and effective. Give it a try and let me know how it works ;) :spyder:

Yes WD-40 and other petroleum distillates do work to some degree but the rubbing alcohol does not leave any varnish, film or residue. I have also heard that Carbuerator cleaner works like a snap as well but again the rubbing alcohol is very benign, doesn't smell as bad as some of those petroleum distillates do. I guess what ever is handy. And I am not trying be-little any of my fine Forum Brothers. Just give it a try that's all I ask. Plus again it is much cheaper than petroleum distillates are ;) :spyder:

WD40's kinda messy I find.

Zippo fluid works better for me. Saturates quickly too.

I use alcohol prep pads and adhesive remover pads. The adhesive remover is a light oil, can't remember what kind right now but it works great and lubes the steel at the same time.

I have used WD40, or some form of window cleaner in the past.

nuthin takes tape residue off of stainless better than lacquer thinner I worked in a fab shop where we made lots of stainless parts and they had a part number laser etched into them and we had to mask them w/ tape before we bead blasted them its a pain to get off w/ anything else but lacquer thinner takes it off like its not even there and it evaporates right off.

WD40 works great. Its kind of like duct tape....you can do a million things with it.

WD40 just released a WD40 pen (got a couple at Home Depot). I keep one in the office; garage; glove compartment. It has a felt tip and you just rub it on the tape residue and wipe it all off with a cloth or paper towel.

I personally hate all the tape residue that gets on my blades.

Actually, Everclear is drinkable especially if you are used to 200 Proof Vodka. Besides, they have maybe perfected stomach transplants. Just don't smoke afterwards as I would guess that your breath would be explosive.

I actually will use a microfiber towel. It's designed for cleaning glass with no chemicals, but I used it to wipe off the blade one time when there was nothing else availabe, and it takes everything off(and leaves the blade mirror shiny as well)

I found a regular liquid detergent to clean the knives satisfactory, but the best results for sticky stuff I got by using kerosen (I guess other petroleum distillate, like gasoline or diesel does the trick just fine too).
