*The crest at the blade juncture and jimped thumb ramp were compromises for saber-grip enthusiasts. Once I had a trainer and had the chance to work with the knife for 8+ hours a day, I realized those were mistakes and created a hot spot. I modify my personal carry knives to remove them.
interesting. the crest never bothered me, but i like it even better now that i put a 5x5 pickpocket on the blade. it helps continue that line.

also, that crazy hollow grind is a thing of beauty and one of my favorite aspects of the yojimbo. i'd hate to see it change to ffg, or to see the blade go thinner. both make perfect sense for your design purposes and are also still quite capable for edc.

The challenge with turning a Compression Lock design into a lightweight is the lateral pressure of the lock bar spring. With back locks, it's no problem because all the spring tension is in the plane of the blade. With lightweights, the lateral pressure wants to bulge the scales. G-10 is stiff and resilient, so it contains that force. FRN is more flexible.

Mike,

Thanks for sharing the behind-the-scenes information about knife design; I find it to be really fascinating. The recently released Lil' Temperance 3 Light Weight has a compression lock, thick liners, and FRN scales. How can the design principles of this knife be applied to the hypothetical Yojimbo LW?

A lot of Spydercos are ugly knives that feel great in the hand.

I've seen a lot of people that just got into knives avoid them in favor of other brands, then over the years gravitate more towards Spyderco.

They know what they're doing. Most won't win beauty contests but they'll sure do a fine job at being tools.
May you find peace in this life and the next.

No doubt! That wharncliff style blade is probably epic.

I see function, and that always looks good in my eyes.

I wouldn’t mind trying a knife with such an acute tip, but I think the x-mbo platform is too optimized for a use case I have no interest in.
Depending on where this talk about a possible LW leads, such a version could be enough to tip the scale for me.

the yojimbo was a knife that i scrolled past for years without noticing. one day, it just clicked and i needed it immediately. it's a great design, but i could see how it's not for everyone. until it is.

Dear Ferruginous:

I have provided deeper insights on the Yo 2's design logic before on the forum. Those would still make an insightful read, but here's the gist:

*I designed it as a Wharncliffe to maximize its cutting power for the available edge length. That was the primary goal for my approach to MBC.
*I used a deep hollow grind because that's what Spyderco could do in-house at the time. I didn't want that aspect of its production to have to be done outside the US factory.
*I left the spine thick for mass so I can open the knife inertially--again a priority in my MBC system.
*The crest at the blade juncture and jimped thumb ramp were compromises for saber-grip enthusiasts. Once I had a trainer and had the chance to work with the knife for 8+ hours a day, I realized those were mistakes and created a hot spot. I modify my personal carry knives to remove them.
*I wanted the overall closed size of the knife to be comparable to a Delica so I could carry it loose in my back pocket if necessary.
*The blade had to be sub 3.5 inches to make it Colorado legal.
*The clip is the Para Military 2 clip, to be totally compatible with all production and aftermarket clips made to fit that knife.[/list]

With the benefit of 20/20 hindsight and a time machine, it would be a little bit different, but not that much.

Stay safe,

Mike
Thank you so much for replying, this is interesting, especially....all of it.

Thanks again, very insightful.

This is literally me, and probably the majority of Spyderco fans. You'll never appreciate a Spydero until you've held and used one. My first Spyderco that I owned blew away the cutting performance expectations I previously had of pocket knives.
