Cruwear Lightweight Temperence
Re: Cruwear Lightweight Temperence
SE is back in stock at Knifecenter, and also at KSF & Whitemountain.
Re: Cruwear Lightweight Temperence
I think this knife fills a gap in the Spyderco lineup. It will definitely be my primary hiking/camping knife. Hoping they keep this one around with a different steel. Or decide this needs to be in the permanent lineup instead of a sprint run.
I was really surprised by the almost mirror finish on the satin CRU-WEAR blade. I oiled it immediately which reduced the mirror quality in the photos. The blade and the handle look much better in person. The handle is very generously big and comfortable with multiple grip options.
I real really want the plain edge one but I’m glad I got this one first. Not sure I need the plain edge one so much more except it would be nice to have both.

Re: Cruwear Lightweight Temperence
Those of us who were there the first time around know that the Temperance is a classic, only let down by the unexciting original steel. I'm sure if there were more of us, these would be flying off the shelves, but personally, I'm happy if it means I can pick up a PE without risking missing them.

It’s good to see there is a trainer coming.

I’m not let down at all by the original steel, vg-10 is a great all around steel.. I’d take an original version temp1 over the new cruwear sprintBrummie wrote: ↑Tue Sep 24, 2024 11:11 pmThose of us who were there the first time around know that the Temperance is a classic, only let down by the unexciting original steel. Re: Cruwear Lightweight Temperence
I keep seeing this thread and get excited for a cruwear Lil' Temperence, the I remember it's a Temperence.
It's actually kinda funny. Suddenly, I'm SURE I missed a reveal, but then I remember. Dang.

Re: Cruwear Lightweight Temperence
I bought one of these as a serrated CruWear Mule and it is a nice knife but man would I not be able to stop myself from buying 2 or 3 Lil Temp 3 LW's in this combo
Re: Cruwear Lightweight Temperence
Received mine today. It is quite the knife
. Does anyone know what the handle is made of though? It sounds almost like melamine, making a ping sound when I flick it with my finger. I ask as I’d like to dye it - I really really really (REALLY) dislike grey.

I’m curious what color do you plan on dyeing it?
I don’t hate the grey, but I love original black handle probably the most.

Re: Cruwear Lightweight Temperence
Still loving my serrated version. I haven't used serrations outside in years but I'm in the jungle now and it cuts through wet vegetation like a laser. Paired with a machete this is going to be my go-to fixed blade for the near-future. No rust either. Is cruwear more stainless than it's chromium content would traditionally indicate? Some voodoo like Magnacut where it's in the solution or whatever?
It would be great to know about when the plain edges will be available please?

Re: Cruwear Lightweight Temperence
These have FRN handles.
Should be trivial to dye black, or a dark color.
I'm gonna go for dark green when the PE releases, and if it turns out bad I'll go black.

It's been awesome seeing pretty old designs like the Temp, Ayoob and Catcherman come back. I love seeing old designs getting new love.Designed by company co-founder Sal Glesser, the Temperance was one of Spyderco’s earliest fixed blade models. Now this classic design is back as a limited-edition Sprint Run, showcasing a gray-colored fiberglass-reinforced-nylon (FRN) handle and a full-flat-ground PlainEdge™ or SpyderEdge™ blade crafted from CPM CRU-WEAR.
May you find peace in this life and the next.

Yeah, I read it said FRN, it’s just a very different feel to the other FRN handles I’ve gotvivi wrote: ↑Thu Sep 26, 2024 3:23 pmThese have FRN handles.

Re: Cruwear Lightweight Temperence
A side by side of the Jump Master 2 and the LW Temperance 1 SE, for anyone that might be undecided between the two. The Temp and Caribbean is for serration comparison - not quite as subtle as the Taichung style, but less ‘spiky’ than my SE dragonfly. A happy middle ground possibly.
In hand they both feel excellent, with the Temp being noticeably more hand filling and the Jump Master being more slimline and flat to body when carried.
An unexpected bonus is that the Temp has quite a long bit of PE at the end, which will come in handy for scraping or point work.
Quite similar in appearance but quite different in use case (with some obvious overlap). I will be using the Temp mainly for slashing down green mulch, as with its full flat grind and shallow scalloped serrations it should excel in that role.

Thanks for the pics & write-up. I already have a Jumpmaster 2 & was on the fence on whether or not the serrated Temperance was worth getting (I'm definitely grabbing the plain edge version), the side by side comparisons give me more data to consider.JoviAl wrote: ↑Thu Sep 26, 2024 6:41 pmA side by side of the Jump Master 2 and the LW Temperance 1 SE, for anyone that might be undecided between the two. Re: Cruwear Lightweight Temperence
On reflection after a few days using it - it is slight less slicey than I anticipated (I was expecting a laser and instead I got a scalpel) but I’m really enjoying it, especially the fantastic handle. The SE Cruwear is pretty delightful to sharpen and touch up. I’m playing with a dual grit edge on it at the moment and the aggression is top notchzuludelta wrote: ↑Mon Sep 30, 2024 6:03 amThanks for the pics & write-up. Hey Al,
Tell us more about your dual-grit edge?

Re: Cruwear Lightweight Temperence
I expect these knives feel quite different in hand. Aside from the differences in the handles, what about balance? Does the Temperance feel decidedly more blade heavy because of its thicker blade and lack of a full tang?JoviAl wrote: ↑Mon Sep 30, 2024 7:51 amOn reflection after a few days using it - it is slight less slicey than I anticipated (I was expecting a laser and instead I got a scalpel) but I’m really enjoying it, especially the fantastic handle.
