New fixed blades you want to see?

#1

Post by SpyderEdgeForever »

What are some specific features such as blade grinds, handle shapes, blade shapes, steel, etc you would like to see on new future Spyderco fixed blades? I would like to see more satin finished lightweights similiar to the Enuff and Aqua Salts. Perhaps a Mini Aqua Salt with a blade under 4 inches.

More high hollow saber and even full hollow grinds. Every time I pull out some of my old Gerbers, I find myself wishing. For awhile all I made were full hollow grinds. I like the stretch2 XL Salts hollow serrated saber grinds though it adds about 0.2oz but lm good with that…

Street Beat with 3mm stock (but make the scales thicker so handle thickness remains the same)
magnacut or LC200N
available in satin and black
coarsely textured forest green micarta
with a taco style sheath like the Waterway that's drilled to accept two G clips when oriented for horizontal carry.

Why?

- The Street Beat as is makes an amazing EDC design, but the stock is a bit thick for a small blade IMO.

- They already made the Subway Bowie a salt, why not do the same to the big brother?

- Subway Bowie can be had in satin or black too

- Original Street Beat was micarta. It'd be expensive but worth it. This would be the ultimate EDC fixed blade. The coarse texture would enhance grip, and it's much easier to polish micarta than make polished micarta more coarsely textured (similar argument is used for thick factory edges and no sharpening notch)

- Taco style sheaths are lower profile.

- Horizontal carry with a single G clip means the knife tends to rotate up and down some. It'd be tricky making a taco style sheath also accept two G clips, but it could be done with a diagonal pattern and having one of the drilled holes double as the drainage hole.

- Green and black is, IMO, the best looking color combo:

Now as far as brand new designs go....

Image

Overmolded rubber/kraton style handle, very slight negative angle, thick stock and blade heavy balance, blade length around 10-11", S7 for unparalleled toughness, classic sheath pro style sheath included. Like a Spyderco take on my go to choppa:

This one is modded, and I'd want a Spyderco style chopper to incorporate my changes into an original design. I ground my saber grind higher, the edge thinner, I removed the thumb ramp, I stripped the coating, and I reshaped the choil to fit human hands better (personally I'd rather lose the choil altogether, I never use it, I just switch to a smaller neutral balance knife for detail work)
May you find peace in this life and the next.

i don't think spyderco fix blades compete well in the market. they cost too much compared to other options. when it's a folder that costs more because it's engineered better, that makes sense, but there are too many companies making perfectly good fixed blade knives that spyderco can't touch when it comes to value. not trying to knock spyderco... it's just not really their piece of the market.

The Manix and Manix XL. As a fixed blade pattern you wouldn't need the finger choil to accommodate the CBBL. You would get one of the most ergonomic knife patterns with the amount of blade edge it deserves and you'd get the added bonus of getting rid of the terrible clip position on the XL. Aeb-L, 3v, 4v, k490, CruWear, I wouldn't care as long as it wasn't in 8cr13.

Now I'm imagining the Manix XL ergos with some 3D scale contouring like most fixed blades have, and no choil like my old drawing:

Posted that Manix without a choil drawing 4 years ago. I'd be all over a fixed or folding version.

The Bob Taylor/Rekat Gijan Warrior in its original prototype spec- no need to change it. It was different in form than the Spyderco Warrior and Pygmy Warrior. And I'm sure there is a story as to why Bob Taylor Mike Janich and Sal did not push thru in getting it produced by Spyderco (probably being because the Pygmy amd Warrior did not sell well enough to justify the effort). But maybe now is the time...

Also, a Jim Hammond Conqueror. Hammond has worked with CRKT in mass-producing some of his Flesheater fixed blades. The Conqueror in a great steel would be sublime.
His Flesheater Runt (4.25"L blade, 9.5"L total) is also nice.

Fairbairn's Cobra prototypes were not satisfactory to him said a relative who knew so, according to an online reference. But the design is fascinating, and has been custom produced off of these by 2 current makers. Perhaps Spyderco could make it more affordably...

And a Robbins of Dudley long dagger. 12"L blade I believe, 16"L total. I'll check on that...

I would post screenshots I took off the internet, but it seems to be discouraged, correct?

I think the thing that I really want to see on many Syperco fixed blades is just longer handles. I think general purpose fixed blades should have at least 4 1/2 in. handles. I like the designs of the Enuff and the Bill Moran fixed blades, but I haven't wanted to get any of them because the handles are shorter than I want.

An Enuff-sized serrated hawkbill would make a great yardwork tool.

A Province in Magnacut would be a sweet camp knife.

The following are the fixed blades I am looking at buying, blade grinds, handle shapes, blade shapes, steel are all there.

On my short list are the Spartan Blades Alala, Harsey Fighter, Formido, Phrike, Harsey Tactical Trout, Harsey Clandestina, Harsey Difensa, Harsey Dagger....you get the idea. The blade profile height, length ratio are all close.

I haven’t owned an Enuff, although the new one is still on my list.

I’d love a competitor to my LT Wright Frontier Valley in Cruwear. Make it thin stock with an FRN handle to keep the cost down. An EDC fixed blade with a minimal handle and under 6.5” OAL so it’s easy to conceal.
I'm happiest with Micarta and Tool Steel.

Top four in rotation: K390 + GCM PM2, ZCarta Shaman, Crucarta PM2, K390 + GCM Straight Spine Stretch.

With this new Sprint Run of the TEMPERANCE 1 model due to hit many dealers shortly I've pretty much gotten my "Dream Come True". I had been petitioning for either a SALT version of the TEMP 1 or a TEMP 1 with newer/better materials. The original TEMP 1 with VG-10 blade steel in SE & PE both have served me well over the years.

Oh there are other fixed blades that Spyderco has made available and many of them are really nice designs. But since I got my first TEMP 1 back in 2004 it's been my fav for quite some time.

And now with a newer/better rendition of the TEMP 1 ( in both edge types) with Cruwear blade steel. Well needless to say I'm very happy for the time being.

(snip)
I'll second this. When I found out the first version had micarta scales, I began pining for a re-release. 3mm thick stock and taco sheath are exactly what I'd like too.

LC200N or VG-10 would be great. Magnacut OK. K390 may contradict the intention of this knife a bit but I won't say no to K390.
