Sage 5, REX-121 HRC?

#1

Post by LC200N »

:nerd What is the hardness, rockwell, HRC for the Sage 5 rex-121? I so wish that they left this detail on websites in general, but this is less and less the case. I know HRC isn't everything, but it also isn't nothing either, and it is a legitimate variable for purchase consideration. When getting high edge retention, super high end knife steels, this is especially important to know. Anyways, can anyone help and provide it's HRC value?

Thank you,
Daniel

North of 70. I believe someone got 72. I’ve seen a video of it cutting glass and it was still fine afterwards.

Yeah, I saw the glass video. That was awesome. I still would like to see an official test or specification. Mine just came in the mail. Let me know if you find where they got 72.

on the fence whether to order the lightweight. I don't need another EDC (I am sure most of us don't) and am also concerned with brittleness of the steel being a factor. Funds don't really allow right now either, but I believe the lightweight at least is regular production?

Very interested in the Steel though and would like to see if I can resharpen it with my Wicked Edge.

Think everyone has those concerns with the steel. Just remember if you do find it chipping too much with your use case you can always put a bigger angle on the edge 20°-25° to increase edge stability and toughness.

Great feature in the Spyderco Byte today about the new Rex-121 Sage 5.
I'm happiest with Micarta and Tool Steel.

Top four in rotation: K390 + GCM PM2, ZCarta Shaman, Crucarta PM2, K390 + GCM Straight Spine Stretch.

I wonder if scratching a windshield makes it easier to bust. I can now mark my alcohol bottles to make sure nobody is taking any when I’m not looking 🤪

Now that makes more sense to me, but I read a few times people were claiming over 70 which seems insane. I’d be curious if this is normal? I’m sure other will do tests as well… only time will tell!

*But, I personally have no interest in this steel and I did something I shouldn’t have and just repeated what I heard.

Hi LC200N,

That's a legitimate question. It's not a secret. If someone wants to know, they can usually find out here on the forum. Someone will punch it and report, or I will get a reading for you and report. We just don't post it on the specs.

We've been running 67-70, I'm currently getting more pieces tested.

Congrats on getting yours. I'm enjoying mine. I just posted about the steel on the Mule Team sub forum requesting a Mule version.

I've seen a number of REX 121 customs (and have one myself) that are 70-71Hrc, but I don't recall seeing anything much harder than that.

Hi Sal,
Awesome! Thank you for the spec. I'm loving mine so far and love your knives in general. I just purchased some venev diamond stones to 1500 grit and diamond stropping compounds. I'm still waiting for them to come in. I plan on only using this particular knife for cardboard (avoiding staples), my garden, maybe some small zip ties, but not as a hard use knife at all. I want to be between 14-17 degrees. I don't mind taking some risk with chipping...mostly to show off 😜. What would your advice be Sal with the blade angle for my intended use?

Sincerely,
Daniel

P.S. I'm still looking for your Slicey Police 4 in K390 with the G-10 handles on eBay. Tough to find. 😜

I spent $550 on new vitrified stones for this one. I’m able to get a mirror edge but I think 220 with a strop or a dual grit may be the best useful edge. I only had the factory edge for a day🤣 I’ll see how far my mirror edge at 17.5 DPS works first.

Yes, I figure 17 is the safest, but I'm very tempted to go lower. 14 degrees is the lowest I'm willing to go. Then, with strops, I plan on going down from 1 micron, to .5, .25, .1, and then yes to 0.025 microns. I didn't get this knife for its ultra practicality anyway. I got it because it is ultra cool. 😎

... I'm not saying that there isn't a practical use for it, but I got it for pure fun.

Hi Daniel,

I haven't sharpened the edge of mine yet. Surprisingly, it still shaves. But I have been working on thinning it down to 20 degrees inclusive. It will take a while, this stuff is slow to sharpen.

As far as recommending an angle, I think you parameters will be safe. Personally, I need to push the limits of most blade steels, and then back up if there is a problem.
