I want to support Spyderco's willingness to take a chance on exotic steels like this. Any opinions on which Rex121 Sage5 to get... G-10 or Lightweight?
Do we have confirmation that the G10 version has the CQI pivot? I'm going G10 of it does, FRN of it does not

Bummer I missed the g10. I guess I’ll wait for the LW version and hopefully won’t miss it.

Neither version of the ReX 121 Sage has been released to any retailers…you have not missed

Oh I see!

I assumed if it’s gone from Spyderco website it’s gone everywhere else. I usually buy directly from Spyderco due to Opfocus.

It’s a regular item so should be back in stock at some point.

Says it's the Lightweight. SKU number looks like G-10? Price also looks like the G-10 version.

I assume the price tag is because the steel is so difficult to work with, but man that's a hard sell.

Wow!

I was really looking forward to this one. Especially in G10. I guess I’m priced out.

Price is high considering you can get a nice Shaman for less. But to my knowledge this is one of the few REX-121 production knives out there, pretty cool. Not to mention the Maxamet LW version is $246, this version is similar.

I'd be more interested if Spyderco had gone the Mule route for a first (and more cost effective) release for REX-121. I can't seem to steel chase at such ticket admission pricing. To boot, edge retention at the cost of all else bores me, but I do hope these perform as others are hoping for.

I was considering getting one of these just for the fun of testing trying out this ridiculously hard steel, but $400 takes much of the fun out of it. I’ll wait and see where European pricing lands before I make a decision, but usually it’s MSRP + overhead and taxes… so …yeah..

Very hard and time consuming to grind and another factor that's sometimes forgotten is that that the foundry most likely charges Spyderco a hefty sum for a exotic steel like Rex 121..everything costs a lot more more now than it did just a few years ago and Rex 121 probably has some expensive ingredients in it..

While not cheap, price is actually pretty good compared to similar steels.

Sage 5 LW Maxamet - MSRP $328
Sage 5 LW REX-121 - MSRP $340

That’s only a $12 difference for a newer “better” steel and everything that it takes to bring it to market. Now if those steels are worth the $100 premium over a Sage 5 in SPY-27 that is a use case, personal preference.

Another thing about this Sage that has me wondering is the geometry. I remember my Sage 1 Maxamet had much thinner BTE geometry right out of box, and the Sage 5 LW Maxamet that I've handled had some of the thickest BTE geometry that I've handled out of Spyderco, off top of the head. I know all of the Maxamet fracturing complaints had to factor in to that decision, but I hope Spyderco haven't doubled down right out the gate and went super thick for REX-121.

This knife has shipped to some dealers. I hope it will be released to everybody soon. I saw a dealer post pics of the ones that he had.

Have the LW burnt orange’s dropped yet?

I see orange G10 and blue LW in stock but not the orange LW or blue g10 yet. Thanks!
