Hairy Woodpecker peering down from the rail.
Never heard of one.
But you can see he has two toes forward and two toes rearward.
A characteristic of woodpeckers and sapsuckers.

No wildlife pictures yet, but a wildlife story.

A couple of weeks ago, I managed to finagle a deal on Craigslist
for a barely used Celestron Inspire 100AZ Refractor Telescope.
A refractor telescope can be used for terrestrial
as well as celestial viewing.

Here it is aimed out my picture window onto about 40 acres of pasture,
wood lines 400 yards away and a small lake 180 yards out.

Image

Yesterday, my feisty Feist, Izzy, was barking at the window.
The Great American Egret was again poised on the edge of the lake.
Peering through the Celestron, I watched as she flexed her wings,
stabbed the water and came up with a pan sized, smallmouth bass.

She then paced four or five steps onto the bank,
put the fish down on the grass and regripped it,
juggled it in the air, turned it around
and swallowed it whole head first.
A bulge slid slowly down her long neck.

I also viewed the craters of the moon one night.
Now all I need to do is figure out how to use
the cellphone adapter so I can take pictures.

ImageImage Cicada , our area did not get hit with the predicted explosion . This one was at end of life cycle and could not fly , just able to flutter wings when disturbed. Dan

They never do that here in the open. Between hawks and pellets they wouldn’t stand a chance
