Police 2 SS blade shrinking!!!

When you can't sharpen the knife yourself. And you ruin the blade to the point where you have to send it to Spyderco to fix.

will grind it down sufficiently to get a good edge.

Use the knife properly and learn how to sharpen it yourself.

Sometimes perfectly sharp knives get sent in for other issues, with tape over the edge, with the words "DO NOT SHARPEN" written on the blade.....and they still insist on changing the hand applied 10dps edge to their factory angle. ask me how i know

I have a Police 3 I've been using and sharpening since they came out back around 2008. The blade width has definitely become more narrow, maybe 2.5 to 3mm worth. Still cuts great.

Personally I think it's a point of pride having used a knife long enough to sharpen it to a more narrow profile. It's kind of sad browsing different knife websites and seeing a bunch of $300-800 knives in high performance steels like 15V and S110V with factory edges. There's so much performance being left on the table. Like driving a nice sports car with 20PSI tires and the cheapest gas & oil you can find.

I will 100% keep it. Spyderco did get back to me on this, and they did offer a discount on a new knife. I've always liked their customer service a lot. My thoughts were on buying a brand-new Police SS SE. I want to try the newer take on the Police SS model, with what looks to be like some jimping on the thumb ramp and screw together construction?!

As a butcher for 20+ years. I used to wear out knives. So yes multiple grinding does shorten a blade.
Same knife below one is older that the other by a few months


Pretty sure Spyderco would grind then sharpen a blade sent in.

My 2 cents, buy a new one, keep the old one. Then invest in a KME, Wicked Edge or some other guided system. Practice sharpening on the old one.

There's nothing that says you can't always send knives in for sharpening, but my biggest evolution as a knife user/enthusiast came when I really learned how to sharpen them myself. Then again when I got good at sharpening.

10x jewlers loupe and a sharpie for marking the edge can also really help your sharpening game. When you can see clearly where you're removing metal, it helps so much. Many times in the beginning I wasn't hitting the apex of the edge (I was getting 99% there). With the loupe I could see the edge, and knew I had to keep going. It also helps you from 'over sharpening', you can see when you've apexed and you're ready to switch sides or refine.
