I've been hesitant to use the "pretty Sebenza". I noticed this week that I've had it for a whole year, and I've rarely carried it. What a waste. That is about to change!

My wife bought me the honeybadger hawkbill because I have been groaning about my lost Spyderhawk for years. It's an inexpensive knife and I hate it. At first it was ok as a hawkbill but the angle is wrong: it's too straight with the handle. The fit is cheap and it constantly needs to be tightened(I am not a knife-fidgeter, only opens when used). I imagine their normal blades are ok, but the worst complaint is the feeble attempt to duplicate the Spyderedge. Rather that flat on one side they kept the angle of a normal straight edge and put it on the hawkbill, resulting in a knife that is terrible to sharpen. Note I carried and used a Spyderhawk and Tasman for 15 years at least so I know how to sharpen them.
I like my HB claw - it does a good job for not too much and is roughly spyderhawk sized. my spyderhawk is better but that H1 ntip is not superb - the serrations are awesome and I agree the ergos including blade angle are better. I used blue loctite on the pivot screw after it came apart and now it's just fine. I think it does most of the job my other serrated hawkbills can.

I have a byrd hawkbill (somewhat smaller) and 2 crossbills (no full SE on those, both of mine are PE, which I guess kinda resembles the harpy in hannibal (the book had a civilian IIRC). this compares well for value and use with most IMO even if it isn't spectacular.

Right now, I think I have a first run merlin, a spyderhawk, the 3 byrds mentioned above, not sure I have a tasman. Great to have a halfway decent SE for my LFP carry.

Yes! Vero Impulse Mini. Though it's not really mini. More of a medium size.

Do you have experience with many other XL Cold Steels? I think I remember you having a few. How does that Recon 1 compare in your opinion?

I've been carrying my Hold Out 1 a lot lately, especially at work. Makes for a passable short machete in a pinch and has a useful shape for food prep. I wish this HO1 had a guard or deep finger choil and I'm interested in other Cold Steel XLs -- really looking at the Rajah 2 for a better pocket chopper.

Yep. I've been using a clip point Voyager XL as a pocket machete for around 6 or 7 years. Nothing bad to say about Cold Steels mega folders besides wishing I could get them with opening holes.

I haven't tried a rajah but I've heard the extra weight & blade length make it a better chopper than the Voyagers.

Blade shapes matter too. The saber ground tanto Voyagers have more blade weight than the clip point, for example.

The 4 Max deserves an honorable mention. Not as long as some of the others but the weight and size give it very nice chopping power for a folder.

All of my XL folders are still rock solid in their lock-up after using them to chop & baton etc.

We got pretty lit up Friday night, my cousin sent me this picture from telling us guys to "look tough with your knives" Guess we didn't do the best job haha! I was happy to see my uncle and dad also carrying knives though! :clinking-mugs Had a great weekend visiting family we rarely see. Including my 97 year old grandma!

Thanks. I’ve not really considered the 4 or 5 Max, but I’ll look into them again. Have a Rajah in the shopping cart, might order it if I can convince myself to spend $90. Not really the blade shape I want and it lacks the TriAd lock, but the 6” Luzon for $35 is also tempting.
