Rustproof Spyderco suggestions needed!

#1

Post by rubes160 »

Alright crew, looking for some suggestions and input from experienced knife wielders here. I EDC different Police models, the longer blade and handles just suit me well and portray some 'attitude' if you will. Plus, GREAT for food prep, depending on which grind I'm wielding. I am looking for stainless / corrosion and rustproof (all of the above) knife suggestions, with a longer blade. I know CPM Magnacut is out there, LC200N, to name a couple, but who has suggestions based on my likes? Thanks guys.

pacific salt 2, might feel most familiar to your polices. H2 is gonna be (atleast on paper) more rust proof than lc200n, but in oractice they are pretty close unless youre dealing heavy salt exposure. PE i like lc200n better, and serrated its h2 for sure.

If you wanna try magnacut, a pm2 might feel most comfortable to you. Personally as much as i enjoy magnacut, still kind lf lean towards lc as my go to. Honestly though, you cant go wrong with any spyderco salt.

Is that Catcherman available in SE? PE? Not a big fan of the partially serrated..

Might be worth checking out that Stretch then. It did initially catch my eye. I may give it a go here.

The Stretch would be close to the Police in size. It does have a hollow grind, which you may or may not prefer.
The upcoming Native Chief in Magnacut would probably work best, though. Even closer to the Police in size, flat grind.
I guess it also depends on whether you like “the hump”. The Chief is rampless while the stretch does have that thumb-ramp.

I’m personally not a fan of H2. I much prefer LC200N, which is also a good choice to get a Native Chief in. I suppose it depends on whether you prefer green or yellow.

stretch xl and pacific salt are both smaller than the police.

catcherman is a touch bigger.

to me the catcherman feels more like a police during use in terms of size.

an argument can certianly made for either of the 3. they're all great.
May you find peace in this life and the next.

Hey rubes160, my two cent:

- Stretch XL Salt: Great knife (to be clear: I only have the ffg VG10 version in SE), but I personally would not prefer its sabre hollow grind for food prep but rather go for an ffg option.
IF you go with the H2: I´d definitely opt for SE, much better edge holding than PE they say (I only tried SE in that steel) and SE generally better performing than PE anyway for me.

- Pacific Salt 2: As has been pointed out already: Not as large as your Police, but still a decent amount of edge and can be had in ffg (and SE... :smirk ).
An LC 200N (and thus ffg) serrated Pac Salt would probably be my choice if I were you

- Caribbean: Not mentioned yet, and in edge length a bit closer to your Police than Pac Salt or Stretch XL.
Personally I would not opt for that one due to the weight, the comp.lock (prefer backlocks) and the G10 (prefer FRN), but that might be different with you.

Catcherman: Don´t have one (yet...), but keep in mind that is has a really thin, really long and not tall blade - should make for a lot of flex, which can be a pro or a con, depending on the task.
I figure though for me the Catcherman would not be a true allround folder anymore, but a bit more of a specialized tool.

Top three going by pocket-time (update April 25):
- EDC: Endela SE (K390). Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10), Chaparral SE (CTS XHP)
- Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 2 SE (LC200N), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), Endela SE (K390)
