What's your interest in the recently announced VG XEOS mule?

I wanna say none. But I only had the description to go from.
If anybody knows more about this apparently new Hitachi steel, I'm all for it !

I usually like a lot of their steels.
:respect In the collection :respect : Lots of different steels, in lots of different (and same) Spydercos.

The name is more interesting than the composition. It's a pass for me.

VG10 with extra corrosion resistance, plenty of interest.

Would have been happy with. VG10 Mule as it’s a steel I have used heaps in Delicas for years. (And no VG10 Mule)

VG XEOS sounds like a great steel to test.

I'm getting the XEOS because its name sounds like a niche video game console from the 90s. 🤣

But seriously, I think it depends on how much of a boost to corrosion resistance we are talking about. I don't have experience with VG-10 (its popularity is before I started collecting/tinkering with knives), but I don't see anyone really griping that its corrosion resistance was lacking. According to Larrin's numbers, it's already in the zone of steels with very good everyday corrosion resistance.

If it was boosted up to Magnacut levels or beyond without sacrificing other performance dimensions, then it might be a sort of "Vanax-lite" option. That could be interesting since that steel is apparently somewhat hard to get, and expensive. Not entirely sure what role that plays in a post-Magnacut world, but always happy to add a Mule to the roster!

Curious as to what the pricing of this Mule is going to look like, but I'm most likely in for a taste.

It's already on the Mule page listed as $75. Could be a placeholder? XEOS

I’m curious if the toughness of the new VG10 will remain the same, increase, or decrease. If it remains the same or increases I’m very interested. The pricing is good enough that I’ll get it to check it out and test it out. Would be way more interested in 14C28N than a new VG10 though.

I’m excited to play with it! I’m a sucker for increased corrosion resistance in anything, and VG-10 is still pretty great stuff for my purposes. 🙂

I've never had any issues with VG-10's corrosion resistance. I'd be more interested in a higher edge retention VG-10 than a higher resistance VG-10. But I suppose that's what SPY27 is for, yeah?

I'm definitely in for at least 1 of them. I don't have any experience with VG-10 outside of kitchen knives, but I really like the idea of taking a high-hardness, relatively corrosion-resistant VG-10 and sharpening the bevel real thin for a super slicer kitchen/camp-kitchen petty knife. I'm sure I'd learn a bit about sharpening it in the process, which I would share, but I can already envision a role like this for the mule if I'm able to snag one. Stoked for something different with this mule!

Thanks for that! Interesting to see it as already being limited to 2 per household.. I wonder if this indicates a rather soon release date?

Same.

Likely not interested but then likely it will turn out to be something special.

My preference would be longer edge retention and easier sharpening. I’m ok with VG10 level of corrosion resistance, climate is high and dry here.

Maybe guys near saltwater will enjoy this more.

I was hoping for something a little more re-donkey-lous for the next mule so I'm on the fence. Haven't had a lot of time to play with the flock.

This comes on the heels of the HIC Mule, which I'd definitely say was re-donkey-lous; perhaps the most thus far. The last "meh" steel was AEB-L released just over a year ago. One "meh" Mule a year doesn't seem too overly spiced to ruin the MT stew. JMO.

The Damascus Mule had a VG-10 core, so its performance was pure VG-10.

Didn't think of the Damascus :fist-bump

Well, when we get re-donky-lous, like the HIC, then we get a bunch of complaints that its hard to sharpen. 😑

The HIC is a great kitchen knife. Best one I have.

I’m sure this version of VG steel will be more flexible in what it can be used for. Excited to try it out.
