Micarta vs ?

#1

Post by PM2 M »

Hello everyone. I am a new member looking for some information. I thought I had read someplace that there is a difference between Micarta and other scales when it comes to either mounting locations and or hardware. In this case I am specifically talking about the Shaman, and would like to know others as well. Can someone please assist with this? Thanks!

Hey @PM2 M welcome to the forum! Try posting your question in the general forum to get some feedback. You are in the tech support sub forum. Any additional information you could provide as well to your question would help too.

Some Micarta scales models have different construction than the their standard model counterparts. Like the PM2 where the liners come out all the way to the edge vs the standard model has recessed liners tucked behind the G10. The Shaman Micarta I believe is the same as the standard G10 Shaman.

Thank you for the response.

Maybe one of the mods can move this to the general forum?

I have successfully swapped the BHQ exclusive green canvas Micarta scales onto my 15v Shaman. Perfect fit.

What were the original scales? How do the liners and the end of the scales match up?

The 15v had brown G-10 scales. I don't have the knife with me. I'll double check later, but they are factory perfect. Everything lined up as it should.

Ok. I think what you are referring to is what Jsumm was explaining above. All of the Shaman have nested liners. Including the the Micarta versions. The scales are CNC'd so the liners fit perfectly within them.
The ParaMilitary2, Para3 and Military2 have nested liners on the G-10 models, but the Micarta models have full liners, where the scales sit flush against the liners. Which means... On these three models, the G-10 scales will not fit a Micarta model and vice versa.

Edit to add... This is for factory made scales. Aftermarket scales can add another level of confusion. :winking-tongue

That is correct. Within a week I bought my first two Spyderco's. That is probably where my confusion came from. Too much information, not enough time to digest. First was the PM2, the second was unfortunately a fake Shaman. Last night I found an authentic Shaman that happens to be a collector edition M4, (which happens to be one of my favorite steels) for $100.00 less than the fake!

Thank you all for helping out with great information and some pictures as well. Soon, I hope to be able to help out with correct information as well.
