Chaparral slipjoint!
Chaparral slipjoint!
Now this is a cool little knife! And dressed in those elegant wooden scales it has ‘gentleman’ written all over it. I hope the spring has some good tension to it. I may need one.

I will need one!
Re: Chaparral slipjoint!
I thought a Chaparral Slipit would be an automatic buy when I heard it was in the works but, having just bought a birdseye maple Chap whose wood looks like it's from a Home Depot lumber aisle, I'll probably wait for a different handle material. The knife was priced well so it's all cool, but I didn't realize the quality of the wood scales could be such a crapshoot. I love the idea of the knife, but... I'll wait.

Re: Chaparral slipjoint!
I was hoping for FRN myself. I suspect it will start with a more premium option, then a more utilitarian version will get released if the sales match expectations.Coastal wrote: ↑Fri May 31, 2024 12:55 pmI thought a Chaparral Slipit would be an automatic buy when I heard it was in the works but, having just bought a birdseye maple Chap whose wood looks like it's from a Home Depot lumber aisle, I'll probably wait for a different handle material. I'll probably buy one in Maple, if only to increase the chances of other handle materials to follow...

Re: Chaparral slipjoint!
I would have preferred FRN, but as a platform I think this could be the perfect slipjoint, so the scale material will probably not hold me back.
But it'll have to wait for an unspecified amount of time, the UKPK MC Salt is the next slipjoint on my list, and has been for quite a while.

Re: Chaparral slipjoint!
The new Slipjoint Chaparral with Birdseye Maple Wood is priced the same as the lockback at $207. A Slipjoint Chaparral with FRN would sell much better if priced the same as the FRN lockback at $125.25.

Re: Chaparral slipjoint!
Me too. I love the Chap and UKPK platforms about equally, but MC Salt elevates the UKPK in this case.aicolainen wrote: ↑Fri May 31, 2024 2:36 pm...the UKPK MC Salt is the next slipjoint on my list, and has been for quite a while.
Re: Chaparral slipjoint!
I am inclined to think that that the choice of handle material was to make it different from UKPK as a more gentlemanly option. And that makes a lot of sense to me.
If I get one, I will most likely beg my friend to make me some carbon fiber scales.

I agree with your assessment, it does make sense, but for me personally I'd prefer Taichung FRN. They do a very nice FRN and the whole gentlemans knife genre doesn't quite jive with me anyways.

I’ve resisted the OG Birdseye Maple Chap because it struck me as too old-timey for the high-tech Chap. But marrying a manufactured “Birdseye Maple” to a slipit Chap seems a perfect and doubly-ironic match. I’m there for it.

I would love to see some ebony of some kind. Purple Heart wood would be nice, but if there was a way to make scales from Diamond Willow, that would be the best.

So many advanced steels to choose from these days, but handles of beautiful natural materials make me long for the days of yesteryear when they were exotic, plentiful, and reasonable. Even cheap knives had gorgeous handles of stabilized natural materials.
Re: Chaparral slipjoint!
Maple is a strange wood to choose for scales to be honest.

Re: Chaparral slipjoint!
I might have to pick one of these up…it fixes the ONLY issue with the chappy which imo, is that the lock is a bit uncomfortable to operate. To be fair, when used as intended, the knife is 100% fine…it’s only when you sit there, messing with it, that the lock starts to feel a bit painful. But unfortunately, when I get stuck in traffic, that’s one of my little coping mechanisms…

That’s actually really, really interesting…I might actually give that a go next time I’m in tinkering mode. Thanks man

Re: Chaparral slipjoint!
I don't have any restrictions where I live but I'm glad to see Spyderco adding more Taichung and another safe slipjoint to the roster. Currently have 5 UKPKs so this isn't a need for me.
If they end up doing the SE and FRN scales though it would be an instant buy. I really want to get my hands on serrated XHP and at this size of knife I'd rather have the slipjoint than the backlock.

Re: Chaparral slipjoint!
I’d like to see an FRN or G10 version one day… And dare I say a full-stainless version steel too - Preferably Magnacut.
