Coated Seki K390 knives?

#1

Post by electro-static »

I’ve been using my mint green M4 coated delica for a while and love the coating on it, it doesn’t flake even with abuse and has is nearly as easy to care for as stainless. It’s really fantastic wish I saw more seki tool steel spydercos with it.

Will there ever be plans to release the K390 seki spydercos with this coating? I like K390 quite a bit better than M4 and having a knife in it with a durable corrosion resistant coating would be just about perfect.

I would be interested too. Even though I haven't had any severe corrosion problems with my K390 knives yet, I fear it's just a matter of time before it happens (especially under the scales, around the pivot area). A coated K390 blade would give me some peace of mind.

I just had a couple of my police models cerakoted. One is k390… it’s not as durable as dlc but it’s something. I mainly did it for the color and unique cool factor

I'm currently actively trying to corrode a Leaf Jumper SE in K390 with outdoor work. Sweating, getting dirty and rinsing off with the hose. So far so good with no corrosion, but I would love to see some coated K390. Just for the additional insurance. Just make sure the liners are coated to

So far Seki has only done TiCN, and that's definitely not durable. Adding a durable coating to Japanese lines would be nice for sure.

Yes, it would awesome to see some coated K390 knives in Seki models. I would love to see DLC make it's way to Seki stuff, but even some TiCN coated K390 would be nice for now.

So far the coating on my M4 delica has held up extremely well. I’d love to see it on more blades.

I’d love it if my K390 had a DLC-coated blade. I own zero coated blades now, but would buy one on K390 in a heartbeat.

I agree that the TiCN coating that Seki uses isn't that durable. This is how my Pac Salt 2 looks after only a few uses around the yard. Bought it new last January.

I wouldn't mind having DLC on the Seki models, but only if it doesn't raise the cost. If it adds $10 more, then I'd rather stick with TiCN, even if it gets banged up more easily, since I'm not overly concerned with aesthetics on work tools.

It is exactly what I am doing with my Leafjumper, It is currently my dedicated yard/garden knife. Very good grip with thick gloves too. No obvious corrosion yet. I should probably clean the dirt off of it to check for patina at least.

DLC, cerakote or new Spyderco in house coating for Seki folders would be awesome. I have to say I love the look of DLT coated olive handled Endela for example, unfortunately not being shipped to Europe. If Spyderco would have more colour options of handles (tan, olive, forest green) and different finishes on blades, it would be a steal. Just thinking of comparison with Bugout family from BM - those different colour options are hot.

Reveal 15 PD1 sprints get close! It’s basically coated cruwear. Edge holding is less but a great steel in the coating you’d like. I’m into the color scheme too

Bumping this thread.

A TiCN coated Delica and Endura in K390 would have me buying at least 2 of each. I really love the performance out of K390, but it just doesn't agree with my chemistry and/or environment to see much pocket carry. Please Spyderco, since many of the wharncliffe and SE Seki K390 models are being phased out, introduce some coatings to the PE variants left in K390!

I wonder if there is something about K390's properties that make it harder to apply the TiCN coating used by the Seki City factories. But yes, here's another vote for coated variants of Seki's K390 folders. A coated Lil' Temperance 3 LW in K390 would shoot to the top of my work folder rotation for sure (I would take a coated PD#1 Sprint version as well).

I always figured since most everyone seems to have such a hard time corroding, or even naturally patinaing K390, Spyderco figured it wasn't worth the effort to add more variation to the K390 line. I can only recall vivi being the only other forumite to have issue with K390 in regards to outright corrosion. I'm actually astounded when I see or read all over the internet that nearly 99.9% of everyone has such great success in keeping K390 corrosion-free, with zero maintenance. Truly baffling, as K390 will start to spot rust in under and hour in my pocket, even sitting in the house. I must be K390's kryptonite.

Even then, the liners in my G10 K390 Police 4 corroded much worse than the blade.

K390 is a really impressive steel. Edge holding for days, obviously, but its more corrosion resistant than I expected, and surprisingly easy to sharpen compared to other edge holding monsters.
May you find peace in this life and the next.

DLC coating capabilities apparently exist in Japan:

https://katsuknife.com/collections/limi ... ed-edition

The questions become accessibility, relationships between vendors, the effects of a process as an additional tempering step on different steels, and, of course, cost.

One approach that might be worth considering is a ceramic sealant. Ken Onion pointed this one out to me at the Blade Show a couple of years ago: https://www.flitz.com/gun-ceramic-sealant/. Flitz polish is widely used by knife enthusiasts, so their brand reputation is solid.

Stay safe,

The DLC
coating of the police 4 in k390 would have me buying a couple more. Not a big fan of the blue scales either lol.

I rite dyed mine black, but that k390 blade here in the desert part of west Texas while carrying the knife in your pocket in our 100 degree days has the side of the pocket knife against you, stain from your own sweat vapor of your body.

Flitz won't stop it or remove it either, as it's down in the porosity of the k390 steel. I can buff the blade with a rag wheel and the stain is set deep in the porosity of the k390...

I am thinking the only thing would be the DLC coating that would make a good option. I understand this won't be a free option, heck I have 3 Police 4's in k390 that I am actively trying to get the blades coated in DLC coated.

Nothing is free, so time will only tell if I can get these coated $$$ I will say it's worth 30 bucks a blade for mine...
