Food Safe Lube/Grease for pivots?
Food Safe Lube/Grease for pivots?
Looking for a good all around lube for my knives. Mostly own Spyderco’s. Have Military 2, Stretch 2 K390, Pacific Salt, Rockjumper, Spydiechef, etc. Is there a recommended pivot lube or grease that will keep the knife smooth and is preferably food safe? What do you guys use if anything?

I use Froglube, not sure if there's more than one blend but the ones I use are marked "non-toxic". It is really impressive for corrosion resistance, and works well with PB washer pivots. I'm not sure if it would work with ball bearing pivots or not.

mineral oil. $2 for a few years worth, lubes knife pivots well, and 100% food safe.

I'll third the mineral oil for use around food.

I use Super lube h3 lightweight oil. Most of superlubes oils and greases are "food safe" but the h3 version is certified for direct food contact. Really good stuff. I use it for everything from fishing reels, to pullies, to knives, and all sorts of stuff.

I also just use mineral oil. I think I bought a bottle a few years ago and still using it. Also use it to oil up cutting boards and one of those cutting board countertops in my basement kitchenette. Cheap and not too thick that it gums everything up.

Been using the same bottle of mineral oil for years. Great stuff.
I've transferred some oil into a needle-nosed oil bottle for easy dispensing of just a tiny amount at a time. The bottle can be found in a store that sells fly tying cements.

Lubriplate SFL-1 and SFL-2 Food Machinery Lunricant (NLGI-1 and NLGI-2, respectively).
Lubriplate FM350AW Multi - Purpose Food Machinery Oil Spray.
I’d post a picture, but the forum software wouldn’t permit.

Good to hear from another Lubriplate fan. I use 105 (calcium, NLGI-0) and SFL-0 (aluminum, NLGI-0) on guns and other delicate mechanisms.Farmer Brown wrote: ↑Sun Dec 17, 2023 4:17 pmLubriplate SFL-1 and SFL-2 Food Machinery Lunricant (NLGI-1 and NLGI-2, respectively).

Good recommendations already.
I am currently busy experimenting with CASSIDA FLUID CP from Fuchs. Been happy so far. Have it in grease form as well.

I had good luck with jujube oil. Better glide/action than mineral oil, perfectly food safe, can be used for massage or skin care. On the other hand it tends to polimerize in cold conditions and is a bit tricky to clean out when it does.
Re: Food Safe Lube/Grease for pivots?
i don't oil my stainless blades. i use frog lube paste on my non-stainless and just leave a heavier coat if they are going to sit for a while. i use kpl or other cheaper oils on my pivots. the pivot rarely makes contact with food, so i don't worry about it. i think kpl is food safe though.

Wahl Clipper Oil.
It can be made significantly more food safe by using it on your pivots only, don’t pour it in your sandwiches.
