I feel like once I get a DLC Military 2 and DLC Chief LW in their baseline steels my Spyderco collection will be complete....

Good luck with that! I wish I had your confidence that I could end my Spycerco addiction by willpower alone. I've "stopped buying Spydercos" dozens of times already and yet...and yet...I guess it's more harmless than other sorts of addictions...the poor fellow below is apparently addicted to cake flour.
At this point I've gotten to try every spydie model I've wanted to try besides a Catcherman salt and Ronin 1.

I've figured out what works best for me and have bought multiples of all those models. Multiple Pacific Salts, Manix XL's, Police folders, Chiefs, Street Beats, Aqua Salts etc.

I'll always keep an eye out on new releases, but when I'm sitting on 2-10 of all my favorite models, there's just not much else to do collecting-wise.

I hear ya. My "non-solution" to the above, is to urge myself, sometimes against my own preferences, to try designs that I'm not sure I'll like. Lots of times I don't, but the few times I'm surprised keep the hobby interesting. My most recent surprise was the Watu, which I was pretty certain I'd not like: delicate tip, insufficient guard on the choil, comparatively heavy, needs jimping under the thumb. I was sure it would bounce. Didn't bounce! Like it lots.

We should check the date list if ever a Reveal actually came out on a weekend.. if not, staying wide awake till tomorrow will not make much sense, but better saving excitement and energy for monday (hopefully so)... ;)
I actually did check that! ;) They’ve never released a reveal catalog on a weekend.

Since it wasn’t released yesterday, I’m guessing Monday (Oct. 2) at the earliest.

... and the NEXT weekend is coming closer and closer... :grimace
Top three going by pocket-time (update March 24):
- EDC: Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10); Wayne Goddard PE (4V), Endela SE (VG10)
-Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), and also Wayne Goddard PE (4V)

And then Monday!

It is a bit odd that this isn’t on the usual schedule. It’s not like the knives are instantly sellable at that point anyway. They must be having last minute issues deciding what goes in it, or maybe even with printing.

I’d like to see Spyderco classics and Spy27 come together.

Delica Spy27 and Endura Spy27 to start.

Interesting post. Makes me wonder whether SPY27 could eventually displace VG10 as the basic steel in the lineup, as ther seems to be increasing calls to replace the latter.

Since Spyderco is the only consumer of SPY-27, I’m guessing they can’t get enough of it to put it as the default steel on knives that sell in such quantities. That said I’d like to see it on more models.

SPY27 is at a noticeable disadvantage price-wise against say S30V.

— Native5 S30V FRN $128.80
— Native5 SPY27 FRN $147.00

How much would it take to achieve economy of scale?

I mean the more you get the less it costs…. Right? Might be a reason for widespread use :thinking

Do we know why the large difference? Smaller batches of SPY27 produced? More expensive ingredients? Proprietary steel requires recoup of research expenses?

Ah, good remarks :thinking

Perhaps such a replacement will still be achievable in the medium term, zo, if Spyderco increases its output of SPY27 - which, in turn, might happen if Spyderco chooses to go a bit more upmarket (since it's getting harder to compete on the lower end, see this thread on the Tenacious for a fresh discussion on the matter).

We’re seeing knives get BD1N, Spy27, and sometimes S110V, as base steels already.
This is the case (or will be soon) on the Para 3 Lightweight, UKPK lightweight, Native Chief lightweight, and Manix 2 lightweight.

The UKPK is coming in at $98

The Native 5 lightweight is the only one of the bunch that starts at S30V with no BD1N.

The Manix 2 is another curios pricing situation because the S30V G10 version is only $151. The Spy27 lightweight is $170. This means the Manix 2 is the only model where the Spy27 lightweight is more expensive than the S30V G10 version.

For example, the Native 5 S30V g10 is $189 and the respective Native Chief versions are $161 (Spy27/LW) and $198 (S30V/G10). It also true for the Para 3.

Not to mention, the 15V Manix 2 Sprint Run was just $157.

Considering these peculiarities, I’m getting at the probability that there is much more to the pricing than the steel. I’m sure it has a lot to do with it because we know that Maxamet is hard to work with, some steels are expensive to purchase, etc., but there are obviously other factors.

Regardless, I’m coming to like CPM Spy27 more than CPM S30V, so I’m ok with the prices and would like to see more of it.

In particular, I’m looking forward to serrated Spy27 and whatever could come out of BBB’s collaborations with Spyderco. I think BBB was talking up some 65 rc Spy27 heat treatment.

Spyderco is already apparently hitting ~62 with it, making it fairly hard for a production folder outside of Spyderco.

Anyway, it is a fantastic steel in my experience and I will echo any enthusiasm about more of it.

I think that Sal mentioned that Spy27 is going to be used for some dedicated models, but not as an upgraded 'basic' steel. It is apparently a lot more costly than VG-10 and I would dare to argue that people who buy (and and happy with) the VG-1ß might find the increase in abrasion resistance a potential issue/downside when sharpening. I think that VG-10 strikes that optimal balance for many users.

Spy27 would also have to be shipped to Japan, further increasing costs.

My guess the only SPY27 model we may see in this reveal is Stretch 2XL SPY27 Sprint run.

I was looking forward for this one quite a bit, but now it would be hard to decide between S2XL and Native Chief LW in SPY27.
Recent favourites: Massad Ayoob CPM CRU-WEAR PE & SE, Yojimbo 2, Lil' Temperance 3.
