So, Sal, is the Caly3 model extinct ?!
So, Sal, is the Caly3 model extinct ?!
I would love to see the Caly3 being brought back as a lightweight or even with some fancy scales. I might be wrong but I remember Sal saying that this was a model refined in time with love. I don’t think it was a poor seller but…who knows… your guess is as good as mine.Maybe the Moki shop was not up to the task. I really hope that Sal will chime in and share his perspective. I must be honest though and admit that my secret dream is to see Sal’s best design ever(IMHO), the wonderfull Dfly2, being slightly scaled up( it’s been discussed before ) into a 3 incher Dragonfly(3). That would be a helluva edc. Or just bring back the Calypso jr. in Magnacut and call it the day

Re: So, Sal, is the Caly3 model doomed ?!
Who produces the Caly line? Is it Seki or Moki? I want to say it is Moki, which is getting back on its feet at the moment. However, isn't the Caly LW going to Seki? If I'm wrong, could somebody correct me?
UPDATE - several people have mentioned that there has been no news of the Caly LW moving to a different factory. I was misinformed.

Re: So, Sal, is the Caly3 model doomed ?!
A big part of it has to do with the manufacturing set back Moki was going through. But You know I’m on board with any support of bringing back the greatest family of pocket knives ever designed

Moki has since the beginning and probably will continue to. I believe the lightweight will still be Moki, as I don’t recall sal has mentioned swapping makers with any models in the family. I wouldn’t expect regular seki bi directional frn texturing either, they tend to like to care about the subtle aesthetic details when it comes to this family, not sure if we will see the fishscale texture brought back or something new but I’m eager to see the new lightweight texture pattern.

Re: So, Sal, is the Caly3 model doomed ?!
Always so negative. I have high hopes the Caly 3 is not doomed
Calys were/are Moki. I don't remember that they were going to Seki but I could've missed something somewhere. I do know that Sal and Eric are big on honor and keeping knives with the same maker but I also remember Sal saying Moki was having issues. That was a while ago
Caly 3.5 LW is supposed to be in the works. I figured a Caly 3 LW would follow depending on the success of the 3.5. Time will tell

Thanks for the corrections. I've updated my original post.
Re: So, Sal, is the Caly3 model extinct ?!
You might be right. I admit ''doomed'' was quite drastic so I corrected the title of my original post. What about ''extinct'' ....almost ...

I hope it's neither doomed or extinct but I understand your concern. I only have the HAP40 Caly 3 Sprint and it's definitely one of my favorite knives. I also have the Caly 3.5 CF. So I don't feel like I need another of either but I sure look forward to the LWs

Re: So, Sal, is the Caly3 model extinct ?!
I still think the Calys are some of the most efficient in pocket no non-sense designs. To be fair, I think that about the Seki designs as well, but they don't feel the same in hand. Design and their long storied history has me hoping the Moki factory will just focus on Caly configurations for now. I hope they can get back up to speed soon. It would be great to have different versions available. FRN LW and maybe some G10 options.

FWI:
Moki is located in Seki.
The other Seki-based manufacturer of Spyderco knives is G. Sakai (Gerber-Sakai), which uses the "Seki-City Japan" stamp.

I like the Calypso Jr and wouldn't complain if they did one but I think I prefer the Caly 3

Re: So, Sal, is the Caly3 model extinct ?!
They all should come back imo. replace the delica/native/military family, and may the calypso family reign supreme as the only series of pocket knives spyderco needs to make. Too much...?
I just hope the calys make a comeback.

Hi Marius,
Thanx for the kind words to you and others on the Caly family design. Yes, it has been a personal design family for me.
We have quite a few designs planned for the maker, which does include a remake of the Caly 3. There is also a Caly 3.5 in FRN (the original Caly 3.5 in CF is still in production). There is a Caly 4 and a Caly 3.5 design to be a smaller pendant series (slip-joint) with different handle materials. Production will be limited and slower as they are a smaller house with limited capacity.
