1. I carry between 2"-6" bladed folders and fixed blades.

2. I carry for utility purposes. Now that I've been lazy regarding gardening/landscaping, my #1 use for knives is cleanly opening bags of cat food and litter.

3. I've been carrying blades since I was 27 years young.

1. What size (blade length) knife do you normally carry?

2.75 in (calpso jr ) I would prefer to be able to carry a slightly larger blade, like the Military.

2. What do you use your knife for?

The following is a list I made after a friend challenged me a while back. These are all things I have *actually* used a pocket knife for, with the exception of making first aid materials.

General utility:
-clipping articles
-opening mail
-opening packaging (particularly snacks, etc.)/separating items
-sharpening pencils
-breaking down waste for disposal/recycling. good for environment and economy. Also always cut those plastic loops that six pack come in - I hear the when they get into the environment small animals get trapped and strangled)
-cutting/trimming paper for presentations, gift wrap, etc.
-cutting and curling ribbons for gift wrap
-car maintenance - scraping rust/paint, etc.,battery terminals, removing filler,
-trimming/cutting plants/flowers
-cutting tape
-cutting chord/string/ties
-cutting/stripping wire
-DIY (e.g. had to whittle part of my new flat pack bed to make the parts fit - just moved in, late at night so power tools were a no-no - would have had to sleep on the floor that night, otherwise)
-keying surfaces for paint or glue
-spatula for chemistry experiments
-trimming sharp edges/burrs/splinters off wood, plastic, sometimes metal goods
-clearing nozzles on bottles
-scraping scale off taps-
-probe (once recovered a stuck coin from a ticket machine)
-makeshift screwdriver and chisel ( :o sorry!)
-lifting/peeling labels and anti theft seals from CDs and DVDs
-removing stones from soles
-tin opener (Dodo!)
-preparing tinder and kindling
-ruler (rough measurements)
-awl (e.g. piercing leather to make zip pulls, adding holes to belts)
-staple remover
-driving and removing pins (when putting up xmas decorations!)

grooming:
-clean/trim nails
-trimmimng hairs
-sharpening/thinning toothpicks
-trimming thread
-scraping dirt off clothes
-shaving calluses, trimming hangnails
-removing splinters/stings

Food use:
-peeling/slicing fruit
-bottle opener (lighter method)
-kitchen prep - sometime use EDC because its convenient, also if away from home
-shelling nuts
-opening cans (light prying)
-barbecues
-eating/serving food (steak knife and general use when camping)
-spreading
-stirring drinks, etc.

I also carry one in my emergency kit, primarily for improvising first aid materials.

I keep editing cause I remember more stuff!

To do all of this on demand with the proper tools I would need to carry:

*pair of scissors
*bottle opener
*screwdriver (more than one type)
*file or sandpaper
*pencil sharpener
*craft knife
*kitchen knife
*table knife
*box cutter
*letter opener
*mini pry bar (or substitute)
*staple remover
*razor
*nail clippers
*callus file or trimmer
*wire stripper
*needle or pin (I usually carry a needle and thread, though)
*chisel
*nutcracker
*can opener
*awl

Instead, with one tool and 20 years of learning how to use it properly (and improperly ) I am prepared for anything.

3. At what age did you begin carrying a knife?

10 years old

1. What size (blade length) knife do you normally carry? of late, between 3.5 and 4.5 inch blades. I would prefer a slightly longer blade, actually.

2. What do you use your knife for? Primarily it is a work knife, for opening shipping boxes and other packaging. Its also carried for personal protection.

3. At what age did you begin carrying a knife? As far back as I can remember I've had a pocket knife. I carried full time starting at about age 8. Haven't been without a knife since, and I'm 37 now.

1.- 2.5 to 4 daily use, longer when in the field
2.- Daily to cut sandwiches, open envelops, cut wrappings on boxes. I used to work during the summer and holidays in camps teaching outdoor activities, so the knifes got use for everything from fire preparation to cooking.
3.- I was allowed to use knifes with adult supervision since I was eight or so, but I did not receive a knife for my own until I was fourteen. I did not buy my own until I was eighteen.

I use a 4" blade on average
I use it from everything to opening the mail to cutting sailcloth to parting lobster warp from the propeller to cutting my apple into wedges - in other words everything!
I began carrying a knife when about 9-10 years old.

Hope this helps you out.

Sal:

1. I carry a inch blade or less. Bigger knives are kept at home. Period. 2. I carry primarily for protection/emergengy/or clipping coupons. In some cases a blade or multi-tool compensates for lack of dexteriy in my injured arm. 3. I began carrying a knife around at age 49. I sustained serious injury to my right arm in the second week of Sept. 2000. Having had 4 surgeries to date, it is obvoius while I am out in public, my casts, wrappings, lack of physical movement make me stand out. Unfortunaely, in this day and age, people of less repute or of nefarious purpose see thius and take immediate advantage. These jackals side up to me ask for change, linger or check me out. Sort of like jackals in nature approaching a wounded deer. The fact is that the disabled, injured, old or infirm, are targets for muggings. Especially in urban areas. Sal, not everyone is helpful in this country and day and age. People are inclined to not get involved, look the other way. I have had people actually annoyed because I move slower, or cannot perform simple tasks easily, like in a checkout line. At the time of my injury, hearing also suffered, so I have a double whammy. When it happened, people walked over me. So, a casual trip to a local Army and Navy Store to get hearing proction led me past the knife counter. It clicked that carrying a blade made sense from then on. I adpted the "Never Again" slogan, and haven't looked back.

Sal,

I've carried a pocket knife every day since I was 8. I'm now 57. My dad gave me my first knife. We lived and worked on a farm and used our pocket knives for every day farm chores (opening feed sacks, cutting twine from hay bales, etc.). My dad was a peaceful man, and he carried a pocket knife until he passed on at age 89.

These days I carry pocket knives with blades of approximately 2 to 4 inches, usually 3 to 4 inches. I use my knives for routine tasks around the house, around the office, and in the field for my job as a geologist.

You might like to know that here in Florida, common pocket knives are exempt from the requirements of our concealed weapons law.

Best regards.
