I think sweat and salt water proof is a must. It needs to be small and light enough to be worn all the time and not taken off unless there is a real need. The Bug is perfect in size. After all, this is not a tactical knife. Magnacut, H1, LC200N, or something similar for blade is what I think. Perhaps it could be DLC coated or something. I don't know. Instead of pearl or something, perhaps Kirinite pearl handles would make it attractive, like a small piece of jewelry.sal wrote: ↑Tue Apr 19, 2022 1:28 amI think that the Police pendant that we made past would be the upper size limit, in my opinion. It's not an easy piece to build. I'd like more input before venturing forth. Design to be shrunk down? New design specific to the use? Material's, size? Eye Candy?

Re: Pendant knife
For me, anything smaller than the Grasshopper is just jewelry anyway. Edge retention doesn't even figure in for me since I can't hold onto a handle that small to do enough cutting to dull the blade. It would be nice if it didn't leave rust stains on my shirt, though.

McBee would be an excellent choice for me as a necklace knife

Depends on the necklace I guess but It could use a carbon fiber show scale perhaps.

Re: Pendant knife
Like many other ideas I find fascinating, I’m not sure I would ever actually carry a pendant knife.
That said, I can’t help pondering on the design challenges.
And though I don’t really know enough about material properties and production challenges and cost driving processes in this area of manufacturing, my theoretical best compromise on price vs performance and looks, is a S110V blade based on it’s extremely high edge retention, which is nice if you’re actually going to use such a small blade. And while not as corrosion resistant as H1/LC/MC, it’s way up there. Probably enough so.
And If G10 (probably my preferred material) can’t support the backspring tension I can’t help thinking that brushed AISI 316 stainless steel scales could be up to the task. It’s incredibly corrosion resistant and already has a great track record as (next to skin) wrist jewelry material. With proper hardening it’s fairly scratch resistant, but DLC would of course be a nice option for even better scratch resistance.

Re: Pendant knife
Of course, I endorse this idea 100%. Maybe we can look at what's been done and then come up with an idea and submit it to Spyderco?Spyderchick wrote: ↑Tue Jul 11, 2023 12:47 pmI’m late to the replies but I wholeheartedly endorse the pendant knife idea

@Spyderchick
Sal, this is great! Will it be corrosion resistant?

Re: Pendant knife
Mcbee with CF show side would make an excellent pendant knife. I already use it as a pendant knife but for most they would want it to be a bit lighter.

Re: Pendant knife
It’s not exactly an established category in its own right, but in my opinion, scale is a lot more important than size when it comes to defining a “Pendant knife.”
The McBee, as weird as it may sound, feels too large to be considered a “pendant knife” to me. In terms of size, sure, it’s small enough that it could fit on a necklace without seeming overly cumbersome but it just feels too bulky to me; The scale is wrong.
Comparing the McBee to knives like the Mini Police or Mini Mariner and the difference in scale is glaring.

Re: Pendant knife
The Lynch deep carry clip on the Mcbee and a paracord necklace work quite well. Pin the clip on the paradors and turn upside down to deploy

Re: Pendant knife
VG-10 is good by me. I like the steel. I hope it is light in weight. No need to get a tooth knocked out when running (don't ask me how I know this).
