Caly 3.5 LW status
Re: Caly 3.5 LW status
Does anyone know if it’s been mentioned if the Caly 3.5 LW will have a 4 way clip? It seems most (all?) Spyderco FRN backlocks larger than dragonfly have a 4 way clip.

Amen. I have been asking sal for this for years.
Imagine it my friend. A Caly with 3 mm thick 3.5 inch blade and mid back lock and good stainless steel and a LIGHTWEIGHT FRN grip. Oh wow this is exciting. A dream knife. Please sal please.

The linen micarta c52 & 54 calypsos haven’t been topped as far as the caly series goes imho. Design and style was the peak on those knives.

Yes, agreed. I still remember the tactical knives article (Steven Dick, maybe?) and the Spyderco ads of that era as a kid along with some jones brothers camp knives that I could.never afford.Tristan_david2001 wrote: ↑Mon Jul 01, 2024 8:06 amThe linen micarta c52 & 54 calypsos haven’t been topped as far as the caly series goes imho. Those original linen micarta calypsos are forever seared into my brain.
Hopefully sales allow them a consistent place in the Spyderco catalog; they belong there.
Edit for spelling

Re: Caly 3.5 LW status
Perhaps still my most anticipated Spyderco... PM 2 cutting edge length in an (exactly) Delica length closed package...and I guess so among the finger choil Spydies the one with the best "edge to closed lenght" ratio (even beating the amazing Stretch 1 in that regard).. lightweight FRN... backlock... a lot to like here.
In a knife that short (closed) even the deep carry pocket clip is ok-ish for me.
Not sure though if it will offer enough "meat" beneath the index finger for my liking. Usually I prefer a lot of handle height there compared to the rest of the handle, to little (or a too deeply recessed choil) can lead to some "floating" of the index finger, at least in the way I hold knives.
Also, speaking of the Stretch 1 above, I also usually prefer a long, straight edge section (Stretch) over a continuos curve there (Caly).
Both nitpicks no dealbreakers though by any means, and anyway just hypothetical so far (never even held a Caly).

Top three going by pocket-time (update October 25):
- EDC: Endela SE (K390). Endela SE (VG10), Manix 2 LW (REX45)
- Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 2 SE (LC200N), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1)

Re: Caly 3.5 LW status
This is from a vid I came across on YouTube of someone at blade show taking a pic with sal at the prototype case. The knife at the very top I have a feeling is the new caly 4 (4” bladed caly). But it’s possible it could be the 3.5 also

@Wartstein
Both blade shapes are gonna be better for different things. Leaf shape blades make great do it all blade shapes. The stretch is advertised as a hunters folder, which is why it has a deeper belly located closer to the tip rather than gradually spread out from hilt to tip. Another respectable thing about this design family is just how pure spyderco they are, they essentially combine all the most used design features in spyderco’s history into their design.

It’ll be interesting to see what they announce will be releasing first out of this knife family, I’m guessing either a lw 3.5 or the caly 4

Re: Caly 3.5 LW status
Ofcourse! The Caly is pure Sal Glesser design at his best and is both a peak piece of cutlery art and practical design meshed into one. My next question is: once Spyderco decides to put it into production, what pattern will the scales have molded in? Checkering? Volcano Grip? Smooth?
Re: Caly 3.5 LW status
I would prefer the 3-inch version, but I’ll happily take either/both. I’ve grown to really like UKPK ergos so if I could get it with back lock I would, in any size.
Re: Caly 3.5 LW status
Since this is coming out of Moki, we’re gonna have a long wait. For you Caly fans, I hope it is worth it.

@p_atrick I think the new temp 1 sprint is coming out of Moki, so sounds like their production capacity might be ramping back up
Re: Caly 3.5 LW status
That's good news if true. I'll keep my eye out. Never thought much of this line of knives, but the amount of praise I'm reading is pretty compelling.Tristan_david2001 wrote: ↑Tue Jul 02, 2024 10:50 am@p_atrick I think the new temp 1 sprint is coming out of Moki, so sounds like their production capacity might be ramping back up
