Removing Left Over Sharpie
I recently had my magnifier that I use to look at my edges confiscated, so I have been going back to the Sharpie trick for some of my sharpening. I like the trick, but what irritates me is that I always seem to end up with marker straying above the bevel when I apply it, then I have ugly black spots left above the bevel when I'm done.
Anyone have suggestions on how to get Sharpie off of a knife blade easily? Preferably some thing that doesn't involve scrubbing since it isn't very fun to try scrubbing so close to a very sharp cutting edge.

I’ve used rubbing alcohol, but acetone or nail polish remover will work faster.

Goo-gone, rubbing alcohol, simple green, I've probably used spit and my finger before. It's steel, so anything you'd use to clean steel without messing it up should be fine. You could probably use brake cleaner even, lol.
Re: Removing Left Over Sharpie
More sharpie. Believe it or not if you have sharpie marks to remove from a metal surface, then just mark it over again with more sharpie and wipe off immediately. It will rub off really well

Best way to get sharpie off a whiteboard when someone has used the wrong one is cover the writing in wipe off pen and it removes the permanent pen.

Nail polish ore acetone is what I use in knifemaking when I get it all over marking squares and blades.

Automotive brake cleaner will also remove it.

I'm not quite that desperate!

Seriously though, thanks for the suggestions folks, it sounds like some pretty rudimentary cleaners can help out. I'm pretty curious to try the use more Sharpie to get the Sharpie off technique and see if it works.

You beat me to it! This is the same trick for removing old white board marker from a whiteboard.

Just be careful with solvents like acetone around plastics and paint. I prefer high-proof rubbing alcohol as a general degreaser / ink remover.

Balistol does the trick for me nicely.
Re: Removing Left Over Sharpie
This was mentioned above, but I wanted to second the "first aid alcohol wipes" option. These are great to throw in your bag or pocket to take with you so you can easily clean your blade after using it on items that leave a residue, plus, it works great on removing sharpie from the blade after sharpening. Best of Luck to ya!

Wow, alcohol took it right off. Didn't think that would work so easily. Problem solved!

Re: Removing Left Over Sharpie
I keep a 200 pack of alcohol wipes on hand for everything from wound, electronic, optic, blade and spot gun cleaning.
Acetone will take any sort of marker off your blade, but I prefer trying alcohol first, if using acetone just dip a q-tip into the acetone and wipe the marks away.

So it goes.
