Re: Nearly-Forgotten TV Shows, Themes, and Ads
Yup, I remember that one. The problem I had with the superhero cartoons of the '70s is that, unlike the '60s cartoons, the superheroes weren't allowed to physically fight the villains. No punches, no throwing them around, etc. The networks eliminated all violence from Saturday morning cartoons. The heroes could punch inanimate objects, but not other characters.
Another issue is the Superfriends always had to have a pair of kids/siblings and a goofy, out-of-place animal character.
Here's the second series that came out 4 years later, in 1977:

Jim,
I was shocked when, in the 1978 Hanna-Barbera Godzilla cartoon, they allowed Godzilla to use his tail to clobber a Rodan knockoff. That was the most violence I remembered from a '70s-era Saturday morning cartoon.
But they still had to have a ridiculous "Godzookie" character.

'77 Chevy Chevette Commercial (1976)
My first car at 18 (in 1981) was a used Chevy Chevette. Not a great car, but it got me where I needed to go. Sometimes, I had to resort to tricks to get it to start. But I never had a catastrophic breakdown. I had it until I moved overseas, after which my parents sold it.

Hawaii Five-O (1968 - 1980)
Intro
I *think* this was the original version of it. Correct me if I'm wrong. I know that Hawaii Five-0 isn't nearly forgotten, but the skill and craftsmanship that went into this intro is astounding. Nowadays, TV intros are so generic and boring. The ones back in the day would really grab your attention and keep it locked in.
I don't understand why they had to have a reboot (that was canceled sometime back). The reboot was awful. McGarrett, Dano & co. would shoot and kill about a dozen bad guys apiece in every episode. It had none of the feel or spirit of the original, so why have it? Why not just make it an entirely unrelated series, instead of a remake?
I hear there's a new Magnum P.I. out now. Again I ask, WHY????

The Big Gundown (AKA, La Resa Dei Conti; Italy, 1966)
OK, this is a movie, not a TV show or ad. But it's highly underrated, and one of my top 3 favorite westerns; the other two being The Good, the Bad & the Ugly; and The Outlaw Josey Wales.
The Big Gundown stars Lee Van Cleef and Tomas Milian. Directed by Sergio Sollima. Soundtrack by Ennio Morricone.
This is the English-dubbed version. The original Italian-language version is 110 minutes long, a good bit longer than this version.

'Shipoopi' from 'The Music Man' (1962)
I saw this movie one time as a kid and had remembered this musical number, but had forgotten which movie it was from. Over the years, I started mistakenly thinking it was from a '60s musical western. Then I wondered if I'd even heard it at all; that perhaps I'd made it up or dreamed it, because of the weird name, 'Shipoopi'. I finally found it again by Googling "Sha Poopie song."

I remembered this intro and the theme song quite well, but I can't remember a thing about any of the episodes, etc. This version of the opening theme was used in the final season (with the inclusion of Rosey Grier to the cast), but this was the version of the theme song that I recalled.

Johnny Appleseed: A Legend of Frontier Life (1954) Biography
I remember seeing this in elementary school, back when teachers used to play films on film projectors in class. I think I saw it a couple times; in 3rd grade, and then maybe again in 4th grade. That means the last time I saw it would have been 50 years ago. I even remembered some of the lines, including: "A land without apples was no land at all."
I actually liked this short film. But TBH, I'm willing to bet that the real-life Johnny Appleseed was nothing like the way he was portrayed in this short film.

Jim,
It was part of the goody two shoes days and TV shows.
Most of them were not all that memorable really.

You're right, Jim. A lot of the stuff on TV back then was actually pretty dorky, old-school or not.
Also, in most (all?) of those old sitcoms from the '60s, they had those ridiculous laugh tracks. How funny is something if you have to indicate where the audience is supposed to laugh?

Re: Nearly-Forgotten TV Shows, Themes, and Ads
I don't think I've ever laughed at something that had a laugh track. I have laughed to some that had live studio audience reactions, though. The difference is palpable, even if the live studio audiences were cued on when and how to laugh.

Jim,
Kinda like the game show clap now stuff?
I thought and still think it's all garbage really and more about stroking someone's ego than anything else.
Kinda like the micro management garbage that never really worked and is still used by poor management even today.
It's all about control and someone's ego trip.

Jim,
That may well be a reason. I always thought it was more like they wanted to make sure the audience doesn't leave them awkwardly hanging, in case the live audience's natural response isn't as uproarious as they wanted a scene to be viewed as.
WWE wrestling is known to use piped-in, prerecorded crowd cheers or boos, depending on what type of response a certain wrestler is supposed to be getting (good or bad guy), if the live crowd isn't responding the way the company wants. Which to me is WAAAAY worse manipulation than any laugh track on old sitcoms.
Believe it or not, WWE does even worse: While piping in artificial crowd noise, they also show closeup clips of audience members from past shows reacting with shock, or cheering or booing. There have been people who appeared in those clips who said they weren't even at the live show; that the clip of them happened months, or sometimes even years earlier, at past WWE shows or PPV's. WWE sucks nowadays, and most of the time they don't even try to create good shows anymore. Otherwise, they wouldn't need to resort to such BS.

TBH, I actually smile and laugh a lot in life; certainly a lot more than my posts around here would indicate. I also don't joke much online, because my jokes always fall flat...
