Maintaining a maintenace-free Siren
Maintaining a maintenace-free Siren
I'm going though a honeymoon and also through the rookie period with my first rust-proof knife :)
I got used to take care for my tools and may be overthinking it...
When LC200N Siren is rinsed fully with the (fresh) water, how to dry it properly? Is it enough to just leave it open for some time? Or do you use compressed air or hairdrier?
I know no steel is 100% rust resistant and want to be on the safe side :)
Thanks!

Consider it 100% rust resistant.
You can let it air dry, open or closed, and it will be fine.

As noted by mushroom nothing much to worry about in your environment. I don’t treat mine any different than my Salt knives. Sirens don’t like sock drawers ! MG2

What and amazing knife :)
I'm so OCD about rust lately... Seeing it where I thought it couldn't be. Even small rust spot on the all-metal stainless G-shock bracelet where it meets the case. It never seen a salt water or even some considerable sweating.
Just 2-3 times rinse in the tap water and letting air dry

Literally just blow it out like a harmonica. I've done far less to my Caribbean and it's fine. Heck I nailed the thing to a tree in my back yard for a month with blood and chicken juice all over it and it was fine.

Re: Maintaining a maintenace-free Siren
So I will try to give a somewhat more comprehensive answer for you.
I used to be a beach lifeguard, currently work in a building right on the beach, and take my buddys boat out every month or so. My salts see plenty of salt water.
In my experience...
Any of the frn salts are pretty much rust proof.
Any of the other salts with different handle materials and/or standoffs, could get small amounts of rust on standoffs or liners but it takes a lot of neglect to do it.
If you are rinsing with fresh water they will be fine.

Re: Maintaining a maintenace-free Siren
Just to corroborate what has been said already: Unlike you I am NOT "ocd about rust" at all, exactly that should make me a good test person for if a knife can be rusted or not
... And my LC200N (and H1) knives do not show any rust at all, despite cutting all kinds of stuff including (citrus - and other) fruits, meat, moist wood, ... and really not always cleaning the blades immediately. Sometimes forgetting about that at all for weeks.
No rust, ever.
That said: Even VG10 is pretty much completely rust proof in my use.

Re: Maintaining a maintenace-free Siren
You probably are :)
A very significant part of my attraction to the salt line is exactly their maintenance free nature and ability to withstand periods of neglect.
Like you say, no steel is 100% rust proof, so there's always a chance you can get spots of rust on a salt knife. That's not going to happen easily though, and to really enjoy the true benefit of your salt knife you just have to lower your shoulders and accept that risk. It's only a tool after all.
I don't use my Siren a ton, but yesterday I brought it on my first attempt at surf fishing of the year.
Cutting bait, field dressing my catch and regularly submerged/rinsed in sea water, this knife was literally covered in some kind of aggressive chemical all day.
After a day like this I do my deep clean procedure, which is; pre-wash the knife under running hot water, using a dish brush. Then submerge it in hot (the hottest my tap can deliver) soap water in half open position for a good while (an hour +). Then I repeat the first step, shake off excess water and just leave it to air dry.
This morning it was buttery smooth and good as new :)

Yes, but from what I (roughly, so don´t quote me on it...) recall rusting of true Salt knives can only happen due to some weird (electro ??) chemical reactions between materials (? something along that lines at least); traces / contamination on the surface of/with other, non rustproof steels that show spots (and not the LC, MC, H1 itself) or exposure to brutally acid chemicals a normal person never comes in contact with.
Just from my experience in normal use, even without much cleaning, there will be no rust - ?

H1 is 100% rust resistant, and really near 100% rust proof.
