well -- let me just say... if sinister anti-hawkbill zombie militants somehow managed to defeat JD in combat (highly, highly unlikely) and hack his spyderco forum account and delete his thread... i'd be the first one to start a NEW new hawkbill thread!!!!!

This thread has a momentum of it's own. It can and has withstood some very turbulent differences of opinion on such a controversial blade style/type. But then again it didn't take long for the citizens here in Spyderville to react to it positively. This is not my thread to delete ;) This thread belongs to the great Guys/Gals of the this GREAT FORUM because it is they that have not only spoken but are still speaking and doing it so very loudly. With quality Forum Brothers like Doctor Lecter, Michael Cook, PJRocco, Clovisc, Ghostrider,999, Daywalker, Worker ( tell like it is)#9 and The other Brothers/Sisters who also have beautifully contributed to this thread I thank you all immensely. And David :) you are more than welcome to contribute as well ;) :spyder: .

The New Hawkbill will be a reality. This thread is the catalyst For what the guys/gals of Spyderville are going to want from THEIR new HAWKBILL. It is not about JD Spydo but about bringing about the much needed new Hawkbill knife. I would be willing to bet that Hawkbill ownership ( Particularly that of Forum members) has gone up exponentially by at least 70% plus since the inception of this thread. This thread has made some wonderful accomplishments. But why stop now????? :spyder:

I've been watching this thread grow since before I even start posting. I remember lurking here for a few months and watching this thread. This thread caused me to get a SS Harpy, and spend weeks hunting down a Spyderhawk.

I dare say I think you all have brainwashed me. To be fair, hawkbills are my second love, as there is one other model with which I'm totally obsessed. Were it not for you guys, I might have more money :D But than I would have never experienced the joy of severing yard waste with a hawkbill in one stroke, and for that I thank you.

Keep up the excellent work :D I look forward to using a new hawkbill inspired by you guys.

In all seriousness, the more you guys talk about this, the more lurkers like me may be prone to buy hawkbills, which in turn will boost sales of any Spyderco hawkbill.

Don't underestimate the influence you all have. A knife is discussed here, and its price doubles on Ebay the next day. For all the members who post here, there are probably fifty more who just lurk.

Thank you for your contributions gentlemem.

Aloha ALL,

Well, here's my ProtoHawk aka Chawk clearing out some yard gunk from my weed whacker. So far, so good, and the only actual benefit having a "Hawksbill" Blade the size of the Cricket or Dragonfly is that it's tip area works better than the C29's in "tight areas". BTW, that ramp I did on the blade, as well as rounding out the front choil more makes a BIG diff in ergos! ;)

As I mentioned earlier, the C29 blade beats out the ProtoHawk when cutting on a flat surface, due to it's fat belly that's able to "rocking chair" cut. The C29's front third or so of it's blade is actually a Hbill anyway, and that is the area that sees the most use on my "normal" Cricket. Therefore, I think it only natural to have a HBill stuffed into the C29 handle...I think Dodge or someone here is gonna try to Hawk his Dragonfly, that should be interesting! ;)

God bless

Yep, that imo the only real "drawback" ;) of the hawkbill cutting on flat surfaces. But we need a new one, like a Bird crossbill blade with a :spyder: hole, liner lock and dark green G10!

that would be great!

Poliwog Hawk?

#271

Post by Hannibal Lecter »

Good day, all.

After some consideration and observations of the new Spyderco Poliwog, I feel that it might be another design that would lend itself well to a hawkbilled blade. Your thoughts?

yes, i agree with Dr lecter . it's quit wide at the pivot area and narrows down to the butt, and looking at the blade it's maybe just milling the top of the blade off in a curve down to the tip to make it a great hawkbill. Maybe someone with better skill can photoshop this modification? Might look real cool!

:spyder: The poliwog already looks pretty broad when closed, wouldn't it be even wider as a hawk? :spyder:

I would not modify the top of the blade - only the bottom. There appears to be more than enough steel to accommodate this. Just take the existing blade and reprofile the bottom edge...

Super Deluxe>>Tanker-Hawk

#277

Post by JD Spydo »

Let's not forget my idea about having a Super Deluxe >>Tanker-Hawk. As I told you all a while back you could either take a Manix frame or the frame of a Chinook II and make a Hawkbill with a big meaty, beefy blade. This Hawkbill would be great for Military and Maritime uses  as well as for us aficionados .

I guess what I am saying is that if Hawkbills become as popular as I think they will then we can run the full gamut of sizes, styles and "specific use" applications. :spyder: Why even my girlfriend has become a Dodo fanatic  .

My Dear J.D.,

I don't think we could kill this thread with napalm. :p

And speaking truthfully, I am glad of it. It shows in graphic detail the enthusiasm for hawkbilled blades, at least among forumites.

Alright, either I'm loosing it or found something interesting out.

I was playing with my hawks last night and found that the action on them seems to be so much smoother than most of my :spyder: 's.

I took a Merlin and compared it to a Delica. Both brand new never put any lub or anything on them.. The Merlin was just smoother.... So I though maybe it was the knife itself.... So I did it with all 3 of my Merlins.. All 3 are smooth as silk..

Next I compared a Spyderhawk to an Endura.... Same thing, the Spyderhawk had alot smoother action.

Plus, my Harpy seems to have the smoothest action out of all my SS :spyder: 's.

Is this a coincidence? Or does it have something to do with blade shape?

Either way... I love it. :)

Yeah, that's the ticket! Hawkbill blade shape = smooth action!
