Thread needs photo. FFG is my preference. K390 or SPY27 would be dandy.

Only 2.9 oz for 3.7" blade? Wow! Great backpacking knife. Safe features, too; a benefit in the backcountry.

I was about to ask what's the attraction with this model, and then you guys come along..

Anything that's eligible for the "Bolster backpacking approved" stamp is worth considering. Would want it to be stainless though.
I told ya’ll it was Siren-esque!

I'll put in a request. Plain and fully serrated FRN. Steel preference?

sal
You’re the best, Sal.

I feel like this knife would shine with a tool steel.

K390 or Cruwear get my vote. FFG please.

If I had my druthers, it’s be OD Green and black Cruwear - but I think that’s up to Jason at DLT.
I'm happiest with Micarta and Tool Steel.

Top four in rotation: K390 + GCM PM2, ZCarta Shaman, Crucarta PM2, K390 + GCM Straight Spine Stretch.

If the request is going in now, that means it’ll be awhile before production. Does that mean the Japanese factory might learn to work with new steels during the interim? SPY-27 comes to mind. Or would the Goddard (assuming it goes into production) use a current steel?

Superblue would be fantastic, but even VG10 it would be great to see another Goddard!

Are the Goddards made in the same Seki factory as the Delica?

I’d love if the Sprint where affordable, but we as a group are going to make sure that’s not going to happen. At least then we can all complain about the price together! :rofl

There are some challenges to a Goddard "Sprint".

The original tooling for the FRN model is old and outdated. The original was made with Micarta, bit the Micarta didn't do a good job at holding clip screws. We could do a sprint in Micrta or G-10, but we'd have to use skeletonized liners to hold clip screws, which would raise the cost considerably. The cost for a new mold, would be too expensive for a sprint.

thoughts?

Instead of liners, could Seki do threaded inserts in G10 or Micarta like Golden does on the G10 and CF Native 5? Would that keep the weight down and be more true to the liner-less original? What would that do to cost vs skeletonized liners?

Going even further, is there a polymer with acceptable properties that could be 3d printed rather than making new handle molds?

I have a feeling that Micarta is going to be the odds on favorite, however, I love G-10. That said if you are making this in Japan I realize the price is going to be high like the new Stretch 2 XL. That said, the new Stretch is my favorite Spyderco in my albeit limited collection.

If Micarta was cheaper than that would be my choice, if they were the same price the G-10.

I am enjoying the Cruwear, however, K390 would be cool but so would Spy27.

Spy27 with sandwiched liner micarta would be old school enough but updated enough for me!

Thanks for this glimpse behind the curtain. I suspect this is the same challenge bringing many of the older models back to life: either missing or old molds and tooling. Things of course us enthusiasts never think of. That being said are linerless G10 scales ala the N5 not doable? If not, I would vote for skeletonized liners and G10 scales.

Thanks for including us in the discussion!
