i was looking at some fossils today, and found one i like for $85. my question is, are they a good brand. they look great, but are they really a good quality as well? i know lumanox is awesome, but i cant afford one. i need a watch to wear w/ a suit, on dates, and for casual use. Never for work! are there other companies i should look at? need some help.

I had a Fossil for a couple years (about 10 years ago). It died after a few years and I just didn't like it.

Now I roll Seiko.

Here's my current watch:

I like the timex ironman digital watches. I like the functions and stuff, and I could care less about looks.

TAG Heuer... That's the Watch i've been using lately, and i really dont need any other. It's waterproof down to 200 meters, has been on some serious mountainclimbs with me, and i always have it on when seakayaking.
I love my TAG.

I was never really into watches, till I got a Casio from a close friend (thanks Jur) :D . And the world has never been the same. This watch is simply amazing. It is sturdy, good looking, precise (because it receives a calibration signal every day from an atomic watch somewhere near Frankfurt) and those solar cells shoud power it just forever. And I use only a minimal part of all its features :o
I suspect it costs more than 80$ though. ;)

From what I understand Fossil watches are not that great. I think they have some cheap Chinese movement, they probably cost $.50 to make.

I would go with a Seiko or Citizen. If you search for "Seiko 5" on eBay you will see lots of selection for less then what you are looking to spend on the Fossil. The Seiko 5 watches have Seiko's 7S26 21 Jewel Automatic Movement.

Seiko Kinetic

Post by Silvercall »

I've been using a seiko kinetic watch for a number of years now. got it as a gift so im not sure how much it is but its probably over $80 buck. The thing is, the watch is powered by my movement (hence kinetic ;) ) so i never have to buy/change the batteries and the watch has been keeping time well since i've had it.

Titus,

It's a $325 dollar watch. But you can pick them up on Ebay for around $200 shipped. (if your lucky)

I used wear a Seiko, but my recent experiences with their customer service...or rather lack thereof had me looking further. Now, I have a Citizen Ti Ecozilla and am happy as can be. The customer service is a whole lot better, too.

Casio G-Shocks can't be beat for bang-for-the-buck. They can be had starting at around $25-$30 BIN on Ebay.

thanks to everyone who replied, it looks like i have my work cut out for me. But so far the Skagen that Doc pointed out i liked, and the Seiko's look great. All of the companies mentioned seem nice, so i guess i have to look around and see if there is a specific one i like. Kenetic would be awesome, but i bet expensive.

Alex,
I have the same atomic syncronized solar G-Shock. I'm on my second one since the first had a electrical short after about 3 years of use. I can get them at wallyworld for $75USD.
Great buy IMHO.
