I have a jacket...
I have a jacket...
...that is AWESOME!
It's also 20+ years old and has gotten a bit thin. The Thinsulate I fear is depressed, literally. Completely flat. My faithful jacket no longer keeps me warm as it used to & I hate being cold when I work.
This jacket has all the pockets you could ever want: 2 Chest Pockets, 2 Zippered Pockets, 2 Button Closure Pockets under the Zippered Pockets:
Hand Warmer Pockets:
And these pockets on the back that I have no name for but are excellent for carrying zip ties, pliers, spare tool batteries, they're indispensable:
It's a Cabela's jacket, I've tried searching on what appears to be a generic product #: RN 56838, and it brings up lots of Cabela's clothing, but not this jacket.
So, the inevitable questions:
1. Does this type of jacket have a specific name? Rancher's Jacket? Farmer's Jacket?
2. Anyone know where I can find this jacket, or something similar? Lots of pockets is important.
3. What do you call those pockets on the back? I'm thinking that might help me find a new jacket.
4. The jacket is quite roomy & I'm thinking a vest might be an option. What vest would you recommend? Do they still make Thinsulate? Maybe a berber lined vest?
Appreciate your thoughts & recommendations...

Re: I have a jacket...
Try checking Carhartt's website. They have jackets similar to yours with Thinsulate and "Quick Duck" canvas. Ebay sometimes has discontinued models.
#3 pockets might be for bird hunting. I've seen them on jackets in the Beretta catalog.
#4 vest recommendation is Walls RN: 20697 / CA01095. Woolrich also makes nice vests. Both are exceptional for their pockets.

Those back pockets are found on upland bird hunting jackets. Maybe that will help you find another?

I agree with Ric, it looks like a bird hunter’s jacket.
You might like something from Carhartt’s SuperDux line, like this.

Keep your jacket and get a Wiggy's insulated vest to wear underneath.
I've had one for almost 20 years with much use and it's still like new.
It and their sleeping bags are among the better purchases I've made in my life.

OK, I think I have half the mystery solved: What I have is a Chore Coat:
https://blog.thejacketmaker.com/what-is-a-chore-coat/
There are lots of companies that make them and the other half of the mystery is why none of them have the awesome pockets on the back, they're so useful.
Other than the insulation this jacket is a tank & with all the pockets it is super-functional so I'm going to do something I think I've only done once, maybe twice: wash it. Maybe I can get my blood stains out of it, then I'll see if Mrs. FeistyKat can mend the few tears that have accrued.
And I'll buy a nice warm vest for cold days.
Heck, I'm not losing a jacket, I'm gaining a lightweight jacket I can wear in warmer weather, or colder weather, with the addition of a vest!

Re: I have a jacket...
There are many places that make those upland jackets, some have more pockets, some less. You should be able to find what you are looking for in a good quality upland jacket. It seems to me that somebody was making one with Gortex and Thinsulate, to keep you dry and warm.

Re: I have a jacket...
If the shell fabric is still serviceable, I would just rip out the insulation and get a separate insulated jacket to wear underneath.
Maybe not as convenient as a all-in-one solution, but at least more flexible with regards to temperature regulation.
As it would go under the old jacket, you should make sure to get a jacket that “breathes” well. Avoid thick, densely woven fabrics and laminated / PU coated fabrics. Also it should have a smooth surface for easy layering.
Active insulation garments like the arc’teryx atom line or Rab xenair line could work well. Also some fleece and wool jackets are done with a smooth finish on the outside for easier layering.
Beside the back pockets, the overall style is quite reminiscent of the M-65 style military jackets. Those can be found for cheap, and there is a padded internal jacket for it as well, that can be buttoned and/or zippered into the main jacket for cold weather/winter wear. I suspect the padded insert jacket is harder to come by, but a great and affordable option if you can find both in the right size.

Layer and keep it alive. I get it I have to replace things with the exact same thing when I wear them out. Even if they've been discontinued for decades. Which is tough because all I have to do is like something and that's as good as the end of it... probably why I have so many multiples of knives.

Did you try to wash it?

Yeah, washing and drying might return some of the Thinsulate loft.

Re: I have a jacket...
With that many pockets I am amazed you can ever find anything!
How about a Barbour waxed jacket? Tough and waterproof, with zip-in insulation. (The tweed flat cap and breeches are entirely optional…)

Re: I have a jacket...
What about repairing the seams that are coming out and relining the jacket with new insulation? The fabric looks like quality (if it's lasted 20 years, it must be!), which is a vote in favor of keeping it going. There's something special about repairing and continuing to use things you love. If you have a family member who's handy with sewing, maybe they'd take it on :)

A good adventure can be hard to beat, seems like the majority of the time it’s more fun and rewarding than the success at the end.

They very beautiful and classical jacket very nice for city, if you live a cold place take in mind to buy also the internal layer.ChrisinHove wrote: ↑Wed Dec 21, 2022 8:56 amWith that many pockets I am amazed you can ever find anything!

Vintage production, especially UK made, has an higher average quality lever related to the actual one.
I love them but if it could be the first one remember that they have a specific/strange smell the wax(You need to like it) and they are a bit noisy not useful for deer/boar hunting.
P.s. Tweed breeches and cap better on a tweed jacket like Chrysalis, Nomad or a vintage Barbour Tweed.
