I don’t know what company made the C60 Ayoobs but the fit and finish on all four of mine is extremely good. Swiss watch level. That’s why I bought four. They look nothing like the Lum in those pictures posted on bladeforum.

I feel like the Vallotton Subhilt is a more compelling alternative to this model. At least, I am confident that the Subhilt has Taichung-level fit and finish, which makes its $273.70 price tag more acceptable.

Why does everyone seem to think liner locks should cost less than a frame lock? There are more parts to machine and match up on a liner lock. Makes sense they would cost the same if not more.

I had issues with both Calys I bought this year. One was so off that even a finger tightened pivot screw made the blade stick at any position you wanted during opening and closing. Loyalty to a manufacturer should not take precedence over loyalty to the customer. This is even more true when other companies can use similar materials and undercut price while still managing to surpass fit and finish. I, again, know statements such as this may bring on some hate, but it’s still true.

$300 knives are supposed to be exemplars of what a company can do. No excuses.

i would say the same for $200 knives. and even $100 knives shouldn't have fit and finish problems. but knives at any price point shouldn't have qc problems. i bet no one has ever bought a tenacious from a walmart that looked that bad.

I would love see more pics of this model. You never really know if it is a one out or larger problem really. Lots of excitement for a new model, then ....... no pics. Hard to judge scope of the issue.

I'm still very pleased from the Polestar from the maker in China. I know Sal has mentioned in the past that it is one of the better makers there in his opinion. You can surely tell because it is a great example for $80. Hard to justify something like the Lum Tanto when something like the Polestar exist.

Seems like I remember similar issues with the last Lum Tanto run, maybe I'm misremembering because I didn't buy that one either.

that is fair... we've only seen one example really. i'm guessing this is from the same factory as the ayoob that saw its share of problems too, albeit not as bad as the tanto we've seen. hopefully it a a one-off, but either way, it's indicative of a real issue spyderco needs to get a handle on.

i agree about the lower cost knives. that's the point i was trying to make with bringing up the tenacious. i really appreciate that spyderco makes quality models available at a wide range of prices. i think this one was way overpriced for what it is, but i don't have to buy it because there are plenty of other great knives to choose from that represent a better value to me.

Yeah, that is why I brought up the Polestar. For $80, no big QC issues that I have heard of. In fact, no big QC issues I have heard of in any of the models from makers in China. At least no trends.

Great point. Maybe there isn’t a QC issue at all. A few anecdotes does not a trend make.

My local brick and mortar closed, but I'm 4 hours from SMKW....for the right knife and being able to hand pick what I want, I have definitely done dumber things.

Just got a Sportsmans Warehouse in town. They had a display case full of Benchmades. Even had one of their 700$ gold class knives. They DID have a few Spyderco's, a Tenacious, combo edge Delica and a PM2. I talked to the manager about getting more/better variety of Spyderco's. We'll see if they do. Fingers crossed.

I have no issues with any of my Chinese made Spydercos or Byrds. Quite impressed actually. IMHO they are indeed worthy of representing the Spyderco label.

A lot of times I think issues like this can make them worth even more money, because the people flipping ones that don't have issues make sure to list them as such and it makes them seem even more rare. "90% of this sprint had all these issues but THIS one is perfect!".

That Lum posted on BF was rough. At the knife's price point, any of the "well, how does she cut?!" counter arguments/excuses for less than perfect execution on construction fall dead flat. That said, this is literally a sample size of one. I think accusations of widespread & rampant "QC issues" are more than a tad aggressive at this point. What do the rest of the knives look like? Very few pictures/reports of these "out in the wild" at this stage..

..well, that escalated quickly..
