Appreciation For Michael Janich And His Visual History Presentations.

Just finished watching:

https://youtu.be/p2sLp7ruy7Y

Janich is very good at his job. I learning more about steels in this short video than I have in the last year. I would love to see more Spyderco models done in this video style along with a deeper dive into steels and their history.

Thanks Mike!

I'm sure we could find a resume of Mikes on the Internet somewhere. I'm only stating what I know, which isn't much:

- Worked at Paladin Press. I was born in 60, and Paladin Press is a pretty cool gig to pull off!
- Works for Spyderco Knives and has designed knives for Spyderco and other bladesmiths
- Studied Filipino Martial Arts (escrima, arnis, kali)
- Came up with his own self defense theories and started his own school
- Makes streaming videos, CDs/DVDs, writer

Pretty good way to go through life.

He also worked for at least one other manufacturer before Spyderco, which lead to his appreciation of Sal's attitude of "we're going to make the best knives we can and have faith that our customers will buy them" rather than "we can't use those materials and still make our price point".

IIRC, the other knife company Mr. Janich previously worked for was Masters of Defense/MOD. If that's wrong, excuse me.

I also really like everything Mr. Janich has to say. Always excellent and insightful.

Mr Janich was also involved in trying to get American POWs back to the US after the Vietnam War...

That says a lot to me about his integrity...

Dear bmstrong and All:

Thank you very much for your posts and the kind words. I'm glad you enjoy my videos and find them informative. Like anything else in life, practice is the key to getting good. I got in front of a a video camera professionally for the first time about 30 years ago and have been doing it pretty consistently ever since. Eleven years as co-host of "The Best Defense" TV show also gave me lots of practice.

Having good stuff to talk about makes the process a lot easier. To that end, Spyderco's rich history helps a lot!!!

Thanks again!!!!!

Stay safe,

Mike

Fluid presentation and very informative. Hope to see more of such videos. I also liked the closeups of the Ball Bearing Lock mechanism.

The transition to Manix 2 (Back Lock to Ball Bearing Lock) in 2009 also changed the steel from CPM-S30V to 154CM (perhaps to reduce cost or availability). It was switched to CPM-S30V in 2012 (G-10 models).

The FRCP models which started in 2012 changed the steel to CTS-BD1N (perhaps to reduce the cost).

Mike Janich is a very special individual. Unique, experienced, open minded, skilled in both MBC and knife design, skilled at video presentation, and a wordsmith beyond comparison. We are very fortunate to have Mike as part of the Spyderco team.

Nice work Mike!

The lightweight Manix (CPM S110V) is my most carried knife.

I was under the impression that SPY27 was close to CPM S30V, I'll have to go back and do some reading on that.
One model that wasn't mentioned was the linerless lockback version. I can see why it isn't in this timeline, it's like a sidestep. I wonder if that one is gone or if we'll ever see a linerless C95 to match it.

There was a little bit of talk a while back about doing a C95 run with Eric's lock improvements.
